TITLE: Blank CanvasBlank Canvas (Paint #2)

SERIES:  Paint #2

AUTHOR:  Emma Jaye

PUBLISHER: Independent

LENGTH: 310 Pages

BLURB:

Chris Bacon is dead. Long live Chrisander Baccioni?

Unable to walk or talk coherently after a hit and run attack, Chris finds himself on the other side of the world with Jase firmly in babysitting mode. Pity and betrayal, even if it was for ‘his own good’ wasn’t something Chris tolerated from anyone, least of all from an ex-lover who was hanging around only out of a misguided sense of duty.

The barely breathing battered boy was all Kathleen had to wipe away her daughter’s shame and continue the Baccioni dynasty. Despite Chrisander’s unfortunate childhood, her grandson was young enough to mould into a god-fearing family man. Surely only an idiot would reject a life of respect and luxury with a beautiful, intelligent woman by his side, for a grubby little flat and a dirt poor, ex-army sergeant.

REVIEW:

Blank Canvas begins right where book one left off, so there was no guesswork or no time at all wondering what happened. After Chris’s accident, he wakes in the hospital to find that his mysterious grandmother from America has come to claim him.

Although she is rich and will pay for Chris to have all the best treatment as well as security in the States, Jase is skeptical about her motives. She makes it clear up front that having homosexual sex is a sin and that she intends to “help” her grandson. At this point things seem like they could get pretty scary, but Jase has no choice but to let the grandmother take him. However, no matter how little she thinks of Jase, he refuses to leave Chris’s side. It’s only when Jase lets down his guard that things get out of hand.

This book had me on the edge from the beginning. With all that Chris went through in the first book, I couldn’t imagine him being thrown into one of those religious “rehabilitation” places. I was really scared for him, but I was happy how things turned out. I also loved seeing the contrast and the almost clash between two cultures when the couple has to leave England for the States. Though there were some dark parts in this book and some near misses, I was in tears in the end and overjoyed with how perfect things wrapped up. This series was a fantastic adventure and I loved every moment. I recommend this book to anyone who loves m/m romance with dark themes.

5 Star Review + Blog Tour: Interborough by Santino Hassell @SantinoHassell #MM #Erotica

interborough_tourbannerInterborough (Five Boroughs #4)

by Santino Hassell

The Raymond Rodriguez from a few years ago wouldn’t recognize the guy he is today. He’s left his slacker ways far behind him and is now juggling two jobs and school. But the balancing act doesn’t allow much time for the man he loves.

David is doing his best to be supportive, but problems at work and his own insecurity leave him frustrated—in more ways than the obvious—whenever he goes to bed before Raymond gets home. The heat and affection between them is still there, but they barely have the time or energy to enjoy it. And it doesn’t help that Raymond is still hiding David from his colleagues.

The stress mounts so high that a vacation in paradise is filled with turmoil instead of harmony, and culminates on their return to the five boroughs with broken promises and heartache. They have to figure out how to stop allowing their differences to overshadow their love. It’s the only way they’ll make it to forever.

Interborough is available from Riptide Publishing. http://riptidepublishing.com/titles/interborough

Review

This books was another awesome installment of the Five Boroughs series. I absolutely loved returning to this couple. The story starts out with Raymond and David being somewhat on the rocks in their relationship. David’s insecurities about the lack of attention from Raymond get the best of him. He falls deeper in the bottle but Raymond fails to see his perspective since he’s just trying to make it with everything he has on his plate. Though he’s in love with David, he still cannot bring himself to come out to everyone he knows, which David has trouble accepting. When one of Raymond’s colleges seems a bit to cozy with Raymond, David nearly goes out of his mind.

There’s quite a bit of heartache, as well as extremely erotic sex in this book. The chemistry between David and Raymond is just out of this world. Despite David’s neediness and insecurities he hast to be the most beautiful thing imaginable. I loved the way Raymond comes undone when things start to crumble between them. Though their situation seems impossible, somehow they find a way through it all. With one more book to go in this series, I really hope too see more of this couple. I recommend Interborough to anyone who loves MM Erotica and MM Romance.

My Rating: I loved it!

Excerpt

Ilyas cocked his head. “Is something wrong?”
I breathed deep to avoid stuttering. “What would be wrong?”
“Just that I miss that smile of yours.” Ilyas smiled in turn.
For a heartbeat, I expected him to clasp my cheek, to draw me close, to envelop me in an embrace, to kiss me breathless, like he had when I had awoken to find myself his tawam rohi . Ilyas closed the display box and returned it to the drawer under the berth.
I exhaled. Of course not. Ilyas had promised to teach me all about kissing, and more, but he’d spoken in the heat of the moment when I’d awoken. Perhaps the fantasy of teaching me excited him more than the reality. My stomach sank.
After all, I wasn’t a eunuch. When Ilyas had still been the prince heir of Nuriya, his harem full of buxom ladies and eager lads, the male form hadn’t seemed to displease him. So long as they were eunuchs, not proper men, as Nuriyite decorum dictated. Nuriyites heaped rules upon everything from eating to sex. Lumians didn’t care, especially when sex wouldn’t provide more mouths to feed.
Or perhaps the fault lay in me, as a person.
Ilyas sank onto the berth with a big sigh. His features seemed drawn and stressed. I perched on the bed next to him, reaching to pet his hair. He groaned, and I froze.
I wanted more. I wanted to learn how to kiss. I wanted to learn how to wrap my thighs around his waist. I wanted—
“It will be fine, Jem,” he said.
I never used to be so selfish. He shouldered the fate of Lumi, and I couldn’t help him. All I did was lie wide awake at night, planning to demand more from him, planning to distract him.
“We can play a game of Go,” he said. “And I will wipe the deck with you this time.”
“Like the last eleven times?” I teased him.
“This one is my game.”

New Release Review: Wes’ Denial by Joseph Lance Tonlet #MM #DarkErotica @JosephLTonlet

TITLE: Wes’ DenialWes' Denial (Tease and Denial, #2)

SERIES:  Tease and Denial #2

AUTHOR:  Joseph Lance Tonlet

PUBLISHER: Self Published

LENGTH: 398 Pages

BLURB:

Wes has spent his life looking for that one special guy who will understand and love him—all of him. From his tender vanilla side, to his darker debauched side.

Throughout high school, his successful career in the Marines, and as a BDSM Dom, he’s remained confident his partner is out there waiting to be found.

However, several events shake his normally unflappable self–assurance.

And, even after he finds Grif, will his past catch up with him and possibly drive his soul mate away?

Goodreads Link

REVIEW:

Hot, haunting, and heartbreaking. Wes’ Denial starts out with Grif and Wes on the rocks, but Wes refuses to give in because he knows Grif is worth fighting for. Then, through a series of flash backs we get a glimpse into Wes’ troubled introduction into the world of BDSM. He first comes to understand some of his dark desires as a teen and then while in Marine Corp boot camp. Though he doesn’t judge himself for it at first, he fears what is inside him and what he’s capable of doing.

Some of these scenes were a bit difficult to read. Though I loved Wes in Grif’s Toy, I did sense a glimpse of something dark and scary in him. There was one point that I almost wondered if Grif was in the hands of a monster. As it turns out, Wes is not so scary, but he definitely has some dark and painful experiences. Seeing this side of Wes made me wonder how the heck he could be truly intimate with Grif while hiding such secrets. At the same time, I was drawn to the erotic scenes in this book. Aside from the steaming hot scenes with Wes and Grif in chocolate, I was fascinated by some of Wes’ past hook ups. For example: Wes’ straight friend in high school who fantasized about a woman making him submit to men was just awesome. Plus, there was also a scene with Wes’ dom trainer, Thomas, that was so hot that it kept playing over and over in my mind. Then, by the end of the book, I was in tears. It was quit unexpected, but I couldn’t ask for a more perfect ending. Overall; amazing, spectacular, and I want more! I recommend this book to anyone who loves M/M dark erotica and M/M romance.

AUTHOR:  Amelia Faulkner

PUBLISHER: LoveLight Press

LENGTH: 444 pages

BLURB: Florist. Psychic. Addict.

Laurence Riley coasts by on good looks and natural charm, but underneath lies a dark chasm that neither heroin nor lovers can fill. Sobriety is a pipe dream which his stalker ex-boyfriend is pushing him away from. Luckily, Laurence has powers most can only dream of. If only he could control them.

Aristocrat. Psychic. Survivor.

Quentin d’Arcy is the product of centuries of wealth, privilege, and breeding, and is on the run from all three. A chance encounter with an arresting young florist with a winning smile could make him stop. Laurence is kind, warm, and oddly intriguing but Quentin’s wild telekinesis and his fear of sex make dating a dangerous game.

When opposites attract, they collide.

Desperate to fix his rotting life, Laurence prays for aid and accidentally summons a fertility god who prefers to be called Jack. Jack is willing to help out for a price, and it’s one Laurence just can’t pay: he must keep Jack fed with regular offerings of sex, and the florist has fallen for the one man in San Diego who doesn’t want any.

If they’re to survive Jack’s wrath, Laurence and Quentin must master their blossoming feelings and gifts, but even then the cost of Laurence’s mistake could well overwhelm them both. How exactly are mere mortals supposed to defeat a god?

Jack of Thorns is the first book in the Inheritance series and contains mature themes and events which may be distressing to some readers. It has a low heat rating and an HFN ending.

REVIEW:

I went into this book with high expectations — and they were met every step of the way. Faulkner writes with a deft hand, with strong characterizations that are consistent throughout the entire book. She drops hints for what I assume will be books to come (at least, they’d better be), and they promise one hell of a series without making me feel starved for plot in the first book. From what I see of the first book, she’ll deliver in the other books as much as she has in this one. This is what I want to see in a series.

There are hints of what might become a BDSM relationship in the future, though they (sadly) aren’t realized in book one. Still, there’s enough to keep my interest and to wonder what might come if Laurence (an addict) and Quentin (a wealthy but somewhat sheltered aristocrat) ever end up in bed together. Because all the drama around what happens when two psychics’ lives collide with each other and a god isn’t enough, I apparently have to be thinking of what they’d do in bed. Laurence certainly wonders, so I won’t feel bad for that!

I know this isn’t a normal pick for the Dark Arts blog, but despite my love of all things dark, there was plenty to keep my interest. A touch of the paranormal, a touch of romance, a touch of what might come of a Dom/sub relationship (please)… and it’s all around a fantastic book. I was sad when I ran out of pages before I was ready!

RATING: I’m crazy about it!

5 Star Review: Snakes Among Sweet Flowers by Jason Huffman-Black @J_HuffmanBlack #MM

TITLE:  Snakes Among Sweet FlowersSnakes Among Sweet Flowers

AUTHOR:  Jason Huffman-Black

PUBLISHER:  Dreamspinner Press

LENGTH:  244 Pages

BLURB:

Two-time ex-con Camden Sanders has decided that Hog Mountain—an isolated community on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia—is the perfect place to continue running small scams without the threat of more prison time. But there are a few problems with this plan. One is the neighborly citizens of Hog Mountain thwarting his dirty dealings at every turn with their kindness. Another is Jackson Rhodes, a closeted Hog Mountain police officer who can see right through Cam’s good ol’ boy act and plans to catch him red-handed despite the attraction they both can feel. But the biggest problem of all is that Cam’s past is threatening to catch up with him, and it could mean trouble for more than just himself.

REVIEW:

Fantastic book! This is the first thing I’ve read from Jason Huffman-Black and I have to say that the book completely sucked me in. The writing style was so fluid and easy to read that on more than one occasion, I forgot I was reading an author new to me and instead imagined I was reading something from one of my favorite authors.

The story starts off with a not so flattering glimpse of Camden. He’s an ex-con and though he’s trying to start over and make a new life for himself, he hasn’t completely left behind his thieving and dishonest ways. In addition to pissing me off several times, he has a one night stand that was so unappealing that it made me dislike him even more. However, the closer he gets with the golden boy police officer, Jackson, the more he seems to redeem himself. By the end, I was rooting for both of them and feeling so bad for Camden due to the troubles his past life was bringing him and those he cared about.

There were so many things I loved about this book, but what drew me in more than anything were the emotional aspects. Though this was an action/ suspense book, it was also quite moving. In my opinion, there’s nothing better than a novel that can bring you to tears, and this definitely had me chocked up. Additionally, the erotic scenes were pretty hot. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves m/m romance that’s heavy on plot and m/m action/suspense. I will definitely be reading more from this author!

Synopsis

What happens in the dungeon doesn’t stay in the dungeon.

“My sex stuff wouldn’t make my father happy, but the feds didn’t mind it at all. In fact, the official story was that I was the ex-boytoy of some now-disgraced Chinese billionaire. The gay wasn’t an issue. Even the BDSM wasn’t an issue. The issue was money-laundering. As long as they saw me as just another party boy, I was safe.”

Or so he thinks. And then 22-year-old reformed bad boy Shale Shelby becomes involved with an A-list Hollywood action star with a strong taste for dominating younger men. His life may never be the same.

Excerpt

…”I really don’t think it’s a good idea for me to get involved with the fans, you know?”

The fans? “You’re really in love with yourself, aren’t you?”

“Don’t pretend you would be here if I wasn’t in the movies.”

“You’re in the movies?”

“What did I just say about playing stupid? There’s a lot of models I could have in my bed right now if I wanted stupid.”

“You’re pretty enough to be in the movies.” I looked him over. Yeah, I could definitely see this one as some kind of star. Those dimples were quality.

“Stop. Just stop. I don’t need a lot of honesty from a blowjob, but I need that much.”

“OK, OK, you’re in the movies, and I’m your stalker, and you had to capture me and teach me a lesson. Maybe you better handcuff me again. I don’t think the last lesson took.”

“I really should ask you to leave.” But we both knew he didn’t want to.

I snuggled close. “All right. Name one movie I’ve seen you in.”

He named five.

Oh fuck. I sat up and took his head in my two hands. Turned it this way and that to study him from every angle. “I just thought you were a guy who looks like him,” I said.

What humans want from the Silver Planet is water. What they find is a race of humanoids who are sentient, but as emotionless and serene as the plants and placid lakes they tend

But then he bonds with Imms, who seems different from the others—interested in learning, intrigued by human feelings. And B realizes that capturing, studying, and killing this planet’s natives has done incalculable damage

When a fire aboard B’s ship kills most of the crew and endangers Imms, B decides to take him back to Earth. But the simplicity of the Silver Planet doesn’t follow them. Interview

When did you write your first story and what was the inspiration for it?

I’ve written stories for as long as I can remember. I was a solitary child for the most part who entertained myself inside my head. As I got older the stories were put on paper, but when I was young, they were only in my mind. I remember as a kid, that when I lay down to go to sleep at night, I would close my eyes and go to whatever story I was in the middle of. I also did that in the car or even instead of playing or watching TV. One of the long-running stories was the XMen. I made up my own character and I would go on missions. Throughout the course of that internal storyline, there was much romance. I got together with Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and many others. My favorite conquest was Cable and may be the origin story for my love of older bears. J My character was Tygra and I was a slinky tiger type kinda like Black Panther or Sabertooth. I also had a similar storyline where I was a superhero beside Batman and he was my love interest.

Later, I wrote funny stories for my friends, passing them during class. I think I may still have some of those somewhere. Then joined role playing groups online and building stories along with others like me. Mark and I were the creators of a storyline and group about apocalyptic vampires who ruled Las Vegas. My character was a centuries old vamp named Lucian who I portrayed as Dave Navarro, back in the day when he was gothic looking.

Do you have a writing schedule or do you just write when you can find the time?

I have broken with my schedule lately, but while writing Snakes, I wrote on the weekends and endeavored to get a chapter done on Saturday and another on Sunday, then spend the weekdays planning the next ones and working.

Briefly describe the writing process. Do you create an outline first? Do you seek out inspirational pictures, videos or music? Do you just let the words flow and then go back and try and make some sense out it?

Where did the desire to write M/M romance come from?

As a child and young adult, I needed to see myself or characters like me in the stories I read. Instead of despairing that there were no gays in my favorite comics, I added them in my mind. I commend today’s comic industry for being so open to diversity so that all children can find themselves in one or more characters. It means so much to a kid still trying to find themselves and learn pride.

Tell us about your current work in process and what you’ve got planned for the future.

I plan a sequel to Snakes but it’s not my current work in progress. Right now I am writing the story of a young boy who has been homeless for a few years and finally connects with the help he needs to get off the street. The story has some autobiographical points to it, but I think that may be one of the reasons I have stalled out on it. For me, it is hard to be sympathetic to myself or to dig deep into my own pain. It’s also hard to create a happy-ever-after for a character so close to me. I do hope to get back to it soon, though

Do you have any advice for all the aspiring writers out there?

WRITE! Just do it. The more you write, the better you get.

Excerpt

When Cam parked his pickup in front of the pumps at his station, he was surprised to find a local police cruiser waiting by the closed garage door. A tall blond cop leaned leisurely against the front bumper, staring directly at him as he took his time getting out. The frown on the policeman’s face was at odds with his stance, and although Cam didn’t think he had much to worry about, he couldn’t help the hammering in his heart, the constricting of his chest.

He’d dealt with cops and guards enough to know there wasn’t a one of them that wasn’t a sadistic asshole. They thrived on making people like Cam suffer. Cam had yet to deal with the local law and had hoped his lucky streak would continue. He had to admit the officer knew how to wear a uniform, though, with broad shoulders and slim waist accentuated nicely. Too bad he couldn’t sit in the truck all day and ogle the man instead of having to deal with whatever he wanted. With a sigh, Cam gathered his wits and opened the truck’s door, stepping out, then turning back to grab his breakfast. Well, shit. Wasn’t this morning starting off with a bang.

Instead of walking toward the officer, he aimed for the front door of the gas station. He’d turned the area attached to the garage into a waiting area with mismatched office chairs and an old coffee table from the Goodwill. Cam had to jiggle the key in the lock a few times before the cylinder turned, and as he opened the door, he heard footsteps approaching.

“What can I do you for this morning, Officer?” Cam asked as casually as possible. “Your cruiser giving you trouble?”

Cam sat his breakfast on the counter that ran along the back wall, then stepped over to the window-unit AC and pushed the button to get it going. It wasn’t that hot yet, but it wouldn’t take long to get there. When he still hadn’t gotten an answer from the cop, he turned to find him doing a thorough visual inspection of the area, then stepping over to the glass door leading to the garage and doing the same, canting his head to get as much of a view as possible without entering. Cam frowned.

“Is there a problem, Officer?” Now he had a reason for concern. What was the cop looking for? Cam had a sudden itch to run for it, although he had no idea what he was running from.

The officer turned, and Cam squinted to read the name Jackson Rhodes above the pocket of his uniform. When Officer Rhodes’s hand came to rest on the butt of his gun, it was all Cam could do not to flinch. “Who is the second coffee for, Mr. Sanders?”

Cam glanced over to his breakfast and back to Rhodes, his nervousness kicking up a notch. “I… uh….”

“Is anyone else here, Mr. Sanders?” Officer Rhodes took a step forward.

Shit! Cam was going into a full-out panic. His gaze darted around the room, looking for some way out of the situation, but then just as suddenly, his subconscious gave him a metaphoric kick in the ass. What the hell? Was he going to let this asshole come into his place of business and fuck with him? He had nothing to hide. Well, okay, that wasn’t exactly true, but he wasn’t going to simply crumple over one question.

Cam slipped into his I-give-not-one-fuck persona and looked Officer Rhodes in the eye. “I don’t see where that’s even a little bit of your business, Officer. Want to tell me what this is about?”

Officer Rhodes took a few more steps closer, until he was crowding Cam against the counter in front of his food. “I’ve been hearing tales on your methods of auto repair. From changing the winter air out of tires to replacing dissolved halogen crystals in headlights or the deoxygenized water in a radiator. A quick background check shows you’ve served time in the past.”

Fuck it! Cam thought. He took a step forward too, coming chest to chest and nose to nose with the officer. “Yeah, I done time, and I paid my debt. I’m here making a fresh start and I won’t have you bad talking my business. I have a logbook of work done, signed off by the customers. It shows I did legitimate work, no matter what you hear.”

“I’d like to see this log, if you will,” Officer Rhodes responded. Damn, the man was fine. Light brown eyes sparking with challenge, blond hair cut short in a crew cut. He looks so clean-cut, you’d think he would squeak when he walks.

Instead of pulling out the log, Cam turned toward his breakfast. “Coffee, Officer? I do have two. Might as well share. It was like I knew I was going to have company this morning.” He busied himself by pulling out the creamer and sugar packets from the bag and placing them where Rhodes could get to them, then pulling out the rest of his purchase and divvying up the food as if he’d meant to buy the cop breakfast.

When Cam glanced over, Rhodes was looking around again as if making sure no one else was in the shop. Then he shrugged and started doctoring his coffee to his satisfaction. Cam did the same and took a sip before opening one of the cabinet doors below the countertop. He pulled out a receipt book and pushed it over to the officer, then scooped up his breakfast and coffee and settled into one of the chairs to eat.

While Officer Rhodes leaned over the counter and flipped through the receipt book, Cam took the opportunity to admire the fine backside on display. The cop was built like a brick shithouse and would make a great addition to his spank bank. No doubt Rhodes had a gaggle of cheerleader-esque girls in town who giggled when he walked by. And that was too bad. Cam wouldn’t mind giving the fine officer a strip search.

The sound of a throat clearing brought Cam back from his thoughts. He glanced up to find Officer Rhodes staring at him with a frown on his face. Oops.

893476Jason Huffman-Black could be described as the porn star alter ego of the mild-mannered editor for several LGBT publishers. By day, Jason edits and writes in a cozy chair, while Mr. Huffman-Black travels the globe on such adventurous excursions as wrestling the one-eyed spitting serpent of Tangiers, ass-spelunking into the hidden tomb of King CockTut, and most recently, sharing a prison cell in a small third-world nation with a rather sweaty fur-covered hulk of a man named Javier.
