— Love is sour like a Sicilian lemon. —

The Family is always right.
The Family doesn’t forget.
The Family pays for blood in blood.

Domenico Acerbi grew up in the shade of Sicilian lemon trees ready to give his life for the Family. Ready to follow orders and exceed expectations. A proud man of honor.
When Seth, the younger son of the Don is kidnapped, it’s Domenico who is sent to get him back. The man he finds though, is not the boy he knew all those years ago. Lazy, annoying, spoiled, and as hot as a Sicilian summer.

Seth Villani wants nothing to do with the mafia. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get a say when the Family pulls him right back into its fold after his mother’s death. Thrown into a den of serpents otherwise known as the Villani Family, Seth has to find a way to navigate in the maze of lies. But when Domenico Acerbi, the most vicious snake of them all, sinks his fangs into Seth, the venom changes into an aphrodisiac that courses through Seth’s veins.

Domenico knows his life is about to change when he gets the order to train Seth up to the role of future Don. Seth isn’t made for it. He isn’t even made. But a man Domenico knows he would never have to fear might just be someone he’s always needed.

If Seth is doomed to follow in his father’s footsteps, he might as well enjoy himself—with the most intoxicating man he’s ever met. Maybe he can even fool himself into believing that Domenico isn’t a handsome sociopath who kills for a living.

REVIEW:

This book started out when Seth, the son of a Sicilian mafia don, is kidnapped, held prisoner and mutilated. When he’s rescued by the handsome Dominico, he instantly falls under the beautiful Sicilian’s spell. Seth leaves his boyfriend in the States and follows Dominico to meet Seth’s father, but on the way, things between the two become heated. When Seth discovers his father has named him to be his successor, Seth doesn’t know what to do. However, with Dominico by his side, he might just make it.

This book threw me for a loop. I was intrigued with how the story began. Then I was reading with a crinkled nose, but by the end I liked it again. My main objection was with Seth. I was interested in Seth up until the point when he came into contact with Dominico. At that point, Seth, the self-proclaimed top, became the biggest baby ever. He seemed like the furthest thing possible from what I’d imagine for a future mafia don. I was sure he was going to annoy the crap out of me for the entire book, but instead, his sexual encounters with Dominico just got better and better. Seth turned out to be the hottest reluctant virgin bottom I could imagine. No matter how much he protested, he couldn’t deny how much he loved it. Then he was all sulky about liking it afterword. In addition to finding it hot, I also found a bit of humor to it as well. This book was part 1 of 3, so I expected a cliffhanger. Even though the first part of the book was mostly sex and banter between the two, I was entertained by Dominco’s gradual breakdown of Seth which turned into something sweet by the end. I look forward to seeing how their relationship progresses in the next parts of this book.

Review: Soaring Past Death (Love’s Landscapes) by Morticia Knight #DarkErotica #MM

TITLE: Soaring Past DeathSoaring Past Death

SERIES:  Love’s Landscapes

AUTHOR:  Morticia Knight

PUBLISHER: Goodreads MM Romance Group

LENGTH: 66 Pages

BLURB:

Dear Author,
After years of doing this I never thought anything could surprise me, but I was wrong. Of all the trainees to be assigned, somehow Viper 44 was the last one I expected to see in the program.

Still so young, but then that’s what the mission requires.

Photo Description:
Black and white pic of a slightly built young man with his head bowed, on one knee, arms wrapped around his other knee. He’s chained to the ceiling by a collar around his neck. In the foreground, there is the bottom half of a man facing him, holding a flogger.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group’s “Love’s Landscapes” event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

This story may contain sexually explicit content and is intended for adult readers. It may contain content that is disagreeable or distressing to some readers. The M/M Romance Group strongly recommends that each reader review the General Information section before each story for story tags as well as for content warnings.

REVIEW:

The story begins when 13 learns he has to put his sub, Viper 44, through specialized training that entails torture and sexual abuse. Though 13 fears his command has learned about his secret relationship with 44, he goes through with the punishment. He hates having to hurt 44, but he follow his command’s orders, doing his best to conceal the fact that he and 44 are lovers. Once they make it through their ordeal, they’re faced with danger neither had expected.

Such a hot short story. I was a bit weirded out by the names being numbers considering I just finished reading another sci-fi book with numbers for names. However, I got over it quickly and became immersed in the story. Though most of the torture between 13 and 44 wasn’t graphic, things did get a bit tense and harsh in the end. I enjoyed the ending and the tenderness of their relationship after everything was said and done. I recommend this free read to anyone who likes m/m dark erotica.

Review: Only the Lonely (Twin Ties) by Lynn Kelling #Taboo #MM

TITLE: Only the Lonely Only the Lonely

SERIES:  Twin Ties (Prequel)

AUTHOR:  Lynn Kelling

PUBLISHER: Fantastic Fiction Publishing

LENGTH: 55 Pages

BLURB:

Evan Savage is a young teen desperately searching for something to hold on to and a way to be noticed. Living in rural Whippoorwill, Pennsylvania, his only family is an absentee father who leaves Evan alone for days at a time while away for work. Friendless and bullied at school, with only a nearby preacher named Jimmy to look out for him; Evan gratefully accepts attention wherever and however he gets it. Sometimes it feels like part of him is missing, and every day the void consumes more of Evan’s ability to fight back against his circumstances. While looking at himself in the mirror within a recurring dream, his reflection keeps reaching out to him with happiness he doesn’t feel, from a world different than his own, though much less tangible. Anonymous sexual encounters with strange men satisfy Evan’s need for company and reassurance that he’s someone worth wanting, as well as test his boundaries. But, faced with the growing temptation to slip away for good, it’s up to Jimmy, and Evan’s dream-world counterpart, to try to keep him there. (Prequel to the Twin Ties series, M/M)

REVIEW:

Wow! I don’t even know where to begin. This book was a heart breaker and among the most taboo book I’ve ever read. The story begins with Evan seeking out companionship from older men. He’s only fourteen, but he has no friends and his father is always away. Evan realizes what he’s doing is risky, but he feels like it’s his only way of having some kind of connection with another human being. When he goes out on a date with a man who seems to show genuine interest in him, Evan feels like he can let his guard down. However happiness does not seem to be in the cards for him.

I’m so glad that this book is a prequel and several books in this series are already published. If they weren’t, the ending would be way too painful to accept. In addition to the tears and heartbreak, this book touched on taboo subjects that most authors wouldn’t dare touch with a ten foot pole. I commend the author for her daring, but also since it was so well written. Instead of being titillating, the erotic scenes make the danger and desperation of what he’s doing even more intense.  Evan is seeking out older men in order to have some kind of companionship, but at the same time he knows what they’ll expect and he’s clearly afraid. He tries to trust, but Evan knows at any moment a man could overpower him and take what he’s not willing to give. The fact that he doesn’t view them as predators, or at least he tries not to, makes his situation even more tragic. Though the ending is devastating, the story is so compelling that I have to read on. I really want Evan to find someone who will love him and not just take advantage of him. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I highly recommend Only the Lonely to anyone who loves taboo m/m erotica  with a lot of angst.

Novel (135,031 words)
Genre(s): Fantasy, Triad, LGBT/QUILTBAG

Following the Prentish/Nemarri war, Kes is rejected by his homeland under the guise of religious purity laws. Though he’s spared execution, the proud Nemarri’s fate is only marginally more merciful than death when he is sold into sexual slavery at a prosperous pleasure house.

Despite his stoic endurance, Kes knows he’s reaching his breaking point, but there is nothing he can do—there is no path to freedom in the Holy Prentish Empire, only a lifetime of humiliating servitude.

That is, until a beautiful young slave and his formidable master approach Kes in the marketplace and make an astonishing offer to take him home with them. The only problem: “home” is the accursed Horthmont Castle from the scare-stories of Kes’s childhood.

Thrown into a world of living myth, powerful magic, and ancient gods, Kes learns the secrets kept hidden by Horthmont’s thick blackstone walls. There he discovers something he thought he’d never know again: hope for the future.

REVIEW:

Fantastic erotic fantasy! As a lover of fantasy and m/m erotica, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The story begins when the master of the gorgeous redhead slave, Talon, purchases the pleasure slave, Kes, for him. Though Kes is drawn to Talon from first sight, he is wary about the situation. It’s unheard of for a slave to own another slave, but Talon is a rare beauty that he could never refuse. When Kes arrives at their castle, he begins to learn all the mysteries behind Talon and his master. Despite the arrangement being the closest thing to freedom he’d known since he was sold into slavery, Kes still yearns to be free. However, once he gets to know his new master’s, a new world opens up for him.

This book was a lot of fun. I loved the magical realm Bey Deckard creates, and I especially loved the characters. I sympathized with Kes’s desire for freedom even though it seemed like his new master had given him more than he could have dreamed of as a free man. Plus, Talon was so beautiful that every moment Kes spent with him was amazing and magical. I look forward to reading the next book  in this series, and I recommend Kestrel’s Talon to anyone who loves m/m high fantasy and m/m erotica.

Blog Tour: Sword and Star by Sunny Moraine @dynamicsymmetry @RiptideBooks #Scifi #MM

SwordAndStar_TourBanner (2)

Welcome to the SWORD AND STAR blog tour!

SWORD AND STAR is the conclusion of a trilogy I started (with my co-author for LINE AND ORBIT Lisa Soem) over a decade ago. It’s been a long, strange journey and now it’s over. It’s not the first book trilogy I’ve finished, but it’s certainly the closest to my heart.

It’s been amazing getting to know this world and these characters over the course of three books, and it’s been even more amazing getting to share it all with readers. Adam Yuga and Lochlan d’Bideshi’s story is done, Eva Reyes and Kyle Waverly have found their own conclusion, Kae and Leila’s part in this tale is over (though you’ll see those two again in the forthcoming LINEAGE), and I’ve bid a fond farewell to the Bideshi seer Nkiruka. Goodbyes are never easy, but when you arrive at a good one, it’s immensely satisfying.

I’m so grateful to everyone who’s traveled with me, and just as grateful to the people coming to the story now. Whatever category you fall into, I hope you’ll find this final volume a fitting end.

Thank you for being here!

But the greatest threat may come from within.

Since the battle at Peris, Protectorate loyalist Isaac Sinder’s determination to eliminate the rebel fleet has only intensified—along with his ambition. The Protectorate is decaying, and it’s clear to Isaac that only he can save it, by any means necessary.

Excerpt:

Moscow,

February

Four years ago

Ominous dark gray clouds rolled in. Snow came down as small ice pellets that cut like glass shards on the skin. They swirled around the mourners as they stood over the twin coffins. A northeast wind blew over the loup garou cemetery outside of Moscow. It cut through the thickest coats and scarves. Alexei Davidoff shivered in his beaver coat and hat. His Enforcers lowered the bodies of his former Chief Beta and his Beta’s Mate into the ground. Newly joined, they were dead for the crime of being gay and holding hands in a public square in Moscow.

“This cannot stand. There has to be an answer to this, someone has to stand up against these thugs.” Alexei moved his platinum hair off his face. His navy blue eyes flashed both anguish and resolve.

“The perpetrators were human, one of the government’s army of gay bashers, Alpha. There is nothing we can do. We cannot harm a human, and the government gives us no recourse to law.” The Beta shook his head.

“When is the next protest?” Alexei paced across the icy ground in front of the graves.

“Tomorrow at noon, in the square,” Vasily Yudin, Alexei’s new Chief Beta said reluctantly.

“I will be there.” Alexei watched Vasily’s expression. His body folded in on itself in resignation. Alexei knew Vasily realized it was useless to argue. He saw that his Alpha had made up his mind. Alexei could tell his Betas were scheming to mitigate the damage.

“We’ll go with you, Alpha.” Vasily gestured to Grigory and the six Enforcers in the funeral party.

“No, I will go alone.” Alexei clenched his fists and set his jaw in defiance.

“Alpha, it’s dangerous. We can’t let you go alone. If the FSB picks you up, there is no guarantee that the council will be able to negotiate your release. Please, both Grigory and I think you should let us and the Enforcers go with you, or you should stay at home. The FSB under the current president is worse than the KGB that preceded them. Peter and Sasha wouldn’t have wanted you to put yourself in danger. There is no helping them now.”

“I cannot let this go unanswered, Vasily. The man who did this wasn’t even arrested despite the fact that I reported the assault. I must protest to the authorities. We have an obligation to try to right this wrong. He was one of mine, one of my household, my personal staff. I am responsible.”

“But, Alpha, we can’t let you go alone into a dangerous situation,” Grigory persisted. “We would be shirking our duty as your Betas if we let you go alone.”

Alexei Ivanovich Davidoff straightened his spine and spat. “I will lose no one else to the government. As your Alpha, I am ordering you to stay away.”

“Alpha,” Vasily got on his knees in supplication.

Alexei put up his hand to silence his Beta. “I will hear no more of this. I will lead the demonstration tomorrow.”

Vasily and Grigory hung their heads in defeat.

March

Three Years Later

“I don’t think I can make it,” Alexei said as he attempted to walk out the front gate of the gulag to the waiting car.

“Let Grigory and I help to hold you up.” Vasily and Grigory each put an arm under one of his shoulders and half-walked, half-carried him to the car.

They strapped him in the back and Grigory spent the twelve hours it took to get to the dacha trying to hold his Alpha up so he wouldn’t fall where he sat.

When Vasily and Grigory finally got him into the dacha, Vasily’s mouth hung open in shock when he took off his Alpha’s coat. Their six foot six, two-hundred-pound Alpha weighed less than one hundred forty pounds.

“What did they do to you?” Vasily asked, tears pouring down his face.

“I was caged most of the time I spent in the gulag. They tortured, beat, and defiled me daily, all because I’m gay and dared to report Sasha’s and Peter’s deaths, and point to who was responsible.”

“They call it prison now, Alpha.”

Alexei sighed wearily, “In modern Russia, they call it a prison. But I’ve been alive long enough to remember Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev’s slave labor camps. They can change the name but it’s still the gulag to me.”

“Alpha, you need to make the change. It will erase your scars and after you’ve changed a number of times, your injuries. It will take a while. Your injuries are severe.” Grigory helped Alexei into a roughhewn chair.

“I can’t change. I don’t have the strength.” Alexei put his head in his hands.

“Katya, Boris, something to eat for the Alpha, right away.” Katya ran to the kitchen and brought back some borscht.

“Finish this, Alpha. You have to eat constantly so your stomach can extend again.”

Grigory and Vasily knelt in front of their Alpha. Vasily spoke, “We’ve been pleading with the First for three years. The council finally negotiated your early release on the condition that you emigrate once you recover. We took the liberty of contacting Alpha Daurensbourg, from Saskatchewan and the Central US…”

“I am aware of Etienne Daurensbourg. He is a friend.”

“The council arranged for your emigration and that of your household. Alpha Daurensbourg will receive you in New York and already purchased a seven-floor townhouse and nine two-bedroom apartments for our people in New York City. Grigory, I, and our Enforcers will emigrate with you along with Boris and Katya.”

“But I have no funds, and you have families here. There I will no longer be an Alpha. I won’t be able to care for you.”

“You are our Alpha,” Vasily said with a stubbornness he had not shown to Alexei before. Alexei narrowed his eyes.

Alexei didn’t fight the emigration, only their participation. Vasily continued, “That’s the beauty of this course of action. Alpha La Farge, who was the North America’s Second, is no longer an Alpha. He is an Omega scrubbing Siberian toilets and can’t make the change. They sent him here eighteen months ago to die in disgrace for kidnapping The Alpha Mate. You have blood right to his territory in Colorado. Alpha La Marche has it now. I know he finds the packs fractious because he has no blood tie and they want one of their own. I’ve made inquiries. He’ll give it to you and you can become Second in North America.”

“I don’t want to be Second, Third, or Fourth for that matter. I can’t save the world. I learned that lesson the hard way. I will see my old friend Etienne Daurensbourg and maybe he can help me find a place to go. I have no funds…”

“Excuse me for the interruption, Alpha, but you do,” Vasily said with some satisfaction.

“As your factotum, Boris handled your funds. He put all of your accounts overseas as soon as the government started its campaign against homosexuals, only leaving enough rubles in Russia for operating expenses. As soon as they arrested you, he liquidated the rest of your investments and wired the funds to our London banker who in turn, had them sent them to The North American Alpha for safekeeping. Alpha La Marche reinvested everything. The American Stock Market has done very well. You are worth ten times what you were before and it’s all protected from the Russian government.”

“We bought first-class tickets to New York flying Air France on a nonstop flight to JFK where Alpha Daurensbourg will meet our party. Alpha Daurensbourg would have sent his jet, but the Russian government refused entry. However, Alpha Daurensbourg obtained green cards for the whole household. It’s all arranged for as soon as you are able to travel,” Grigory added.

It took until November for Alexei to regain his health and put on enough weight to have the strength to make the change that would take away the scars from the constant whippings. He still had some internal bruising that would only go away with time. Alexei needed rest, food, and a place to recover. But, even many transformations couldn’t take away the psychological damage the gulag caused, the malaise of the soul. For that, Vasily thought his Alpha needed a miracle. As soon as Alexei could bring out his wolf, Vasily and Grigory had their Alpha and his party on a plane to America. It was right before Yule.

* * *

At Alpha Daurensbourg’s urging, Armand La Marche, the Chief Alpha of North America, gave Alpha Alexei Ivanovich Davidoff the territory of Colorado and a seat as Fifth on the Loup Garou Council of North America.

“You were Second in Russia, Fifth is an insult,” Vasily complained.

“No, it’s not. I’m grateful. I’m tired of tilting at Russian windmills. I need time to gather my strength and clear my mind. I have a place waiting for me at Garou as the officer in charge of Research and Development once I’ve fully regained my health.”

“You’re entitled to…” Grigory sputtered.

“I’m entitled to nothing. I was born in Russia. My mother was a citizen of the United States. She never filed for American citizenship for me when I was born. It was too long ago. I’d have to forge papers and with my accent, they would know I’m Russian which in the current climate, is not a good thing. I have a green card. I can become an American. For once, I’m going to be able to do the job I trained for. I have degrees in three kinds of sciences. Research and Development is where I belong.” Alexei sighed. “I don’t want anything else.”

“Your status…”

“If you are upset about the reduction in my status, go work for the new Russian Second.” Alexei’s face turned hard.

Vasily bowed his head in supplication baring his neck. “No, Alpha, we’re yours. Whatever you decide to do, we will go with you. I just wanted you to have options.”

“I’m taking an option. I’ll be Fifth and grateful for the consideration. I’ll leave the politics to Armand. Obviously, he’s better at it than we are. Although there has been some resentment, miraculously gay bashing is now a hate crime in the United States, against federal law, and gay marriage has become legal.”

But temptation entangles them as the malicious ghosts of Jaye’s past returns to haunt their every step. Jaye’s ghosts are bad enough, but the demon from Dixon’s past is real enough to put both of their lives in danger. (M/M)

REVIEW:

Absolutely beautiful! Arctic Absolution begins when the Alaskan cop, Dixon, responds to a robbery at a convenience store. However, when he arrives on the scene, he finds the slim, beautiful Jaye who looks like a teen. Jaye is an x-con with a gang tattoo on his face. Though he looks like trouble, Dixon is drawn to him and also wants to help him. As their lives become entwined, Jaye learns about Dixon’s abusive x-boyfriend, Marcus, and Dixon’s fear of Marcus alights something in Jaye. He can’t stand that someone hurt Dixon in the same way Jaye had been hurt.

This book was unbelievably hot and just so damn beautiful! The first time Jaye and Dixon were together was breathtaking and heartbreaking all at once. Having read Caged Jay prior to reading this book, I could really sympathize with Jaye and all that he’d gone through in prison. It broke my heart that he escaped that hell just to freeze and starve all alone in his cabin, where he was still being haunted by his ghosts. That Dixon came into his life and extended a hand to help him was just perfect and made me love Dixon right away. After reading Caged Jay and seeing how badly they broke Jaye in prison, I really enjoyed how Jaye is built up in this book. It was also perfect that Jaye found someone who is just as broken as him. Jaye is so protective of Dixon even though Dixon is older and a cop. I love everything about this series. I look forward to reading the next book. I recommend Arctic Absolution to anyone who loves m/m romance with violence and dark themes.

RATING: In love with it!

Blog Tour + Giveaway: North to Zombieville by Meg Bawden #MM #Horror @megbawden

Banner300x250

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Meg Bawden, author of North to Zombieville.

Hi Meg, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Hi! Thank you so much for having me. So, my name is Meg, as you know, and I am an Australian author. I’ve always loved writing, but never thought I’d get to a point where I could submit my work to be published. When you’re growing up, being a writer seems like nothing but a dream, but it was a dream I wanted to follow. I’d been writing M/M since 2007, but never had the bravery to submit something, much less finish it to begin with. Dreamspinner Press has always been my first preference and when I finally finished North to Zombieville, I knew it was them who I wanted to submit it to. I expected a rejection, so when I received my acceptance email, I was beyond thrilled. I nearly cried.

North to Zombieville is a science fiction/horror story set in the future. 2029 to be exact. It’s based around a married couple, Dallas and Raleigh Jenson. Dallas is a former army rifleman, while Raleigh is a photographer. During the zombie outbreak, they are driven apart and Dallas makes it his mission of find his husband. When they finally do reunite, the horror of the torn apart city of Townsville, Queensland, has taken a toll on both of them. This story is about survival, love and friendship. It’s about believing in each other and relying on others to survive each and every day against strong and dangerous creatures.

It’s my first novel I completed and I’m quite proud of it. 🙂

Character interview – Raleigh

  • What do you find attractive in a man?

Eyes. I love a man’s eyes. There is something special about them and it’s what immediately catches my attention.

  • The first thing that went through your head when you saw Dallas?

I wondered what his heritage was. When you look at Dallas, you see a tall, muscular man with bronze skin and beautiful facial features. He’s gorgeous and the moment I saw him at his sister’s wedding, I wondered where his family came from. I assumed he was Pacific Islander or Maori.

  • Do you think you’ll insist the author visits you again?

Oh, I know she will be. Our stories aren’t done yet. We’re in for a lot trouble yet.

  • Before you met Dallas, what was your ideal man?

I never really had a type. Though, if I did, I guess I’d say it was a muscular man, but not a gym bunny. I always found gym bunnies to be too obsessive over muscle gain. I never thought I’d get a man like that though. But if we’re talking about ideal man, a man I thought I’d want to find, it’d be a kind man. Someone who treated others equally and never looked down on people. I’d dealt with that enough in my life with my parents, I didn’t want a partner like that too.

  • You’re going out for dinner. What’s your favorite food?

Bangers and mash. No seriously, I love bangers and mash and there’s not even any innuendo in that. I love sausages. They are my favorite food. But if we’re talking about a nice restaurant, then Italian food.

EXCERPT:

A loud crash and screams from downstairs made them pull away. The diners on the top floor were glancing around worriedly, some of the men showing caution as they stood, but making no move to head downstairs and see what was happening.

Raleigh frowned toward the stairs. “What was that?”

Dallas narrowed his eyes and stood, taking Raleigh with him. The screams were filled with pure fear. It wasn’t just downstairs, though. Distant shrieks echoed through the street as well, but when Dallas glanced over the balcony railing, he couldn’t see anything odd. A crowd had formed on the sidewalk and they were peering around the street in confusion. Glass shattered, and then a rush of people scrambled out of the Strand Delight. One lady fell on top of the glass, her legs dragging over the shards, but whatever scared her was more important than the pain she obviously felt from the glass, because she kicked off her high heels and got to her feet to run again.

Car horns and crunching noises similar to pieces of metal colliding with each other filled the air. A car accident, maybe? But there was more than the sound of one accident. It put Dallas on high alert.

“Raleigh, stay here.” Dallas moved toward the stairs.

“Dallas, I’m coming with you.” Raleigh started to follow him.

“No! I said stay here, and I mean it.” It came out as an angry growl. He hadn’t meant to snap, but if something was going on downstairs, he didn’t want Raleigh in the middle of danger. He had defense training; his husband didn’t. “Please, baby, stay here,” he said, softer than before.

Raleigh hesitated and then nodded. He took a step back toward his seat. Dallas felt eyes on his back as he descended the stairs.

The sight he found nearly made him retreat. Tables were upturned, the glassware and utensils scattered over the floor. Bodies lay on top of each other, blood oozing from holes and torn skin. An older lady’s body was askew in the middle of the room, covering a young boy who couldn’t have been older than ten. His body was twitching, but his neck was in pieces, chunks of meat torn from his jugular. The people left standing were screaming or running toward the exit.

The people who had fallen didn’t look right. Their faces had deep gashes, with blood gushing from their cheeks and down their chins. With some, their mouths drooped on one side, their gums dark and bloody. Their eyes were lifeless, as though they were dead on the inside.

People on the streets ran into the restaurant, pausing as they saw the bodies on the floor Badgestart to move and shift as though they were puppets on a string, only missing their master. Upon taking in the scene, they’d run out again.

It all seemed absurd, like a B grade movie that didn’t even make it to the cinemas. Dallas frowned, taking a step up on one of the stairs, farther away from the scene. He stared at one of the women, who rose, her face scratched up badly.

“Ma’am, are you all right?”

She didn’t respond, only groaned in an animalistic way. She started to stumble toward Dallas, her left leg dragging behind her. Her foot was bent backward and she was putting all her weight on her very twisted and broken ankle.

“Ma’am, are you all right?” Dallas repeated, but she ignored him, continuing her walk toward him.

Diners from upstairs came rushing past him, shoving him roughly out of the way.

“No! Don’t go out there!” But it was too late. They weren’t listening to him—fear controlled their every movement.

This had to be a nightmare. It was the night before their anniversary and he was still in bed, he had to be.

He wasn’t watching the lady, and she managed to catch him off guard and shove him to the ground. She slammed herself on top of him, her teeth bared as she dived toward his neck. He raised his elbow, slamming it into her face. She let out a pained squeal and her head jerked back, making her neck crack loudly. But that still didn’t deter her. This time, she went for his arm.

Over the lady’s shoulder, Dallas saw a man clambering out of a door. The man paused, glancing around the room, obviously searching for something. Survivors. Dallas opened his mouth to ask for help at the same time the woman grabbed a piece of wood from a broken table and slammed it against his forehead. Dallas’s head smashed hard against the floor, and his vision flickered for a moment.

By the time he looked again, the man was gone. Dallas would have to deal with the woman on his own. Using all his strength, he shoved at her twitching body, and she went flying backward into a broken chair. She shrieked as Dallas struggled to stand. His legs felt like jelly beneath him.

He stared at her in confusion. How did she keep getting up? It was impossible. But this entire thing was impossible.

“Dallas!”

Raleigh’s voice. He had to get back to his husband. He spun on his heel, but before he could get anywhere, a hand grabbed his ankle and he fell forward.

“Dallas, where are you?” Raleigh’s voice was on the verge of desperation. “Dal!”

“Raleigh!” Dallas called back, but the sound of a car horn close by drowned it out.

As he opened his mouth to call out again, whatever had grabbed him clawed up his trousers. He twisted and stopped in shock. A man this time, but he looked worse than the lady. He was older, with a receding hairline, but his forehead was peeling and blood was cascading down the side of his head. Only part of his teeth remained in his mouth, and even those were halfway out of his gums. To top it off, he only had half a body. From the waist down, there was nothing but his insides dragging behind him.

“No, no, no. I don’t want to go!” Raleigh’s voice sounded distant among the screams from outside. “He’s alive! No. He’s alive!”

“Raleigh!” Dallas shouted again, but as before, his voice was lost in all the other noise.

Anger and anxiousness welled in his chest, and he let the emotions take over. He kicked at the man holding him, slamming his boot into his face. The man squealed as his skull shattered under the force of Dallas’s kick. His body went limp and he released Dallas.

Rising, Dallas quickly retreated back upstairs to Raleigh and made his way toward the balcony. He paused when he found it empty.

Fear curled in his belly, his skin tingling. “Raleigh?”

He was met with silence.

Raleigh?”

But still he got no answer. He spun around, surveying the dining room.

“Leigh, where are you?” He looked out toward the street. More and more people ran out of the restaurants along the Strand, and very quickly the streets filled with running, screaming people. He had no fucking idea what was happening.

Dallas ran to the railing, looking over the balcony. It was then that he realized there was a ladder leaning toward the railing. Raleigh must have climbed down it.

Dallas took two steps at a time. His feet hit the ground and he desperately scanned his surroundings. He pulled out his phone and rang Raleigh. It went straight to message bank. He angrily pressed the End Call button.

“Raleigh!”

The scared crowd ignored him for the most part, though a couple shoved him hard as they ran past. Some tried to get into their cars, but with too many people in the streets, they couldn’t go far. A couple of drivers tried to nudge people with their vehicles, but it only had negative effects. Some of the people in the streets were just like the woman in the Strand Delight. Their eyes were dead, their faces and any other exposed skin bloody and scratched.

One of the men nudged with a car spun around, eyes flashing a dark red as he slammed his hands on the hood. The hood made a crunching sound, and the man screamed, spit flying from his mouth as he pounced on the crumpled hood. The woman in the car shrieked and jumped out, kicking off her heels and running down the street with the mobs. But the man obviously wasn’t going to allow that. He ran after her. He wasn’t fast, but he was fast enough to catch her. He grabbed her by the hair, jerking her backward. She screamed again, but he threw her on the ground and tore at her neck like a starving cannibal.

Dallas made to move toward them, but the woman’s scream turned into a gurgle and then nothing. It was too late. Dallas could have saved her life, but he hadn’t. He couldn’t. He needed to find Raleigh. He needed to protect his husband.

“Raleigh?” His voice cracked under the strength of his roar. Yet it was barely audible over the cries of fear filling the street.

The woman from the restaurant dragged herself out of the Strand Delight. She stretched out toward Dallas, a stupid grin on her face that caught bloody teeth flashing at him.

Dallas acted on adrenaline. He ducked beneath her arms, spinning until he was standing at her back, then grabbed her head, twisting it hard and quick until her neck snapped and she fell to the ground, lifeless.

He dropped to his knees, his stomach churning in fear and desperation as the need to vomit slammed into him. But he held it in.

“Raleigh….” he whispered, biting his lip hard. He needed to find his husband.

Something shone in his eyes from under the lamplight and he immediately zeroed in on Raleigh’s phone. He grabbed it, tapping it desperately, but it was dead. “Dammit!” he growled. “Raleigh, where are you?”

Review: Risk Aware by Amelia C. Gormley #MM #BDSM #NewRelease

TITLE: Risk AwareRisk Aware

AUTHOR:  Amelia C. Gormley

PUBLISHER: Riptide Publishing

LENGTH: 323 Pages

BLURB:

Tattoo artist Geoff Gilchrest is convinced his life is some sort of cosmic joke. Why else would a hemophiliac also be a masochist? He’s given himself more than one elbow bleed since puberty just doing what guys do when alone and bored, so forget about whips and chains. How many partners would contemplate playing with someone even a mild flogging could kill?

Gallery owner Robin Brady knows he can deliver what Geoff needs: to be taken to the edge of danger but never beyond. But Robin came to Saugatuck to get away from the leather scene and heal from a betrayal by his former sub, so he’s not sure he should get involved with Geoff. His ambivalence isn’t helped by the fact that Geoff’s unwillingness to communicate about his well-being hits Robin in some very raw places.

Geoff’s hemophilia isn’t the obstacle he thinks it is. Instead, a lack of trust—on both their parts—is what could end them before they have a chance to begin.

REVIEW:

This was the first book I’ve read by Amelia C. Gormley, and I wasn’t at all disappointed. Risk Aware begins when the hemophiliac, Geoff, who is also a masochist is at a leather club/resort dreaming of all the things he wants a dom to do to him. He knows all he can do is dream since any strike to his body will likely start internal bleeding that wouldn’t stop and may lead to his death. However, Geoff grew up with his mother treating him like a china doll, and he wishes he could just let go and have the pain he craves. When Geoff meets Robin, his dreams appear to be coming true. He can trust Robin to touch him in the right ways, being just rough enough to alight his fantasies without putting him in danger of starting a bleed.

I have to admit that I approached this book with caution. I’m not a huge fan of needles and the sight of blood used to make me faint. So, reading a book about a masochistic hemophiliac had me cringing before I even read the first page. Despite my caution and reservations, I read this novel without crawling out of my skin. There were some scenes with needle play that I tried not to visualize too much, but other than that I was able to enjoy this book with a minimal amount of cringing. Though Geoff and Robin had to tone down what they were able to do in the bedroom, the scenes were all very hot. There was always the fear of Geoff braking somehow, and even though they had to be extremely careful, they did get a little rough at times which had me on edge. Overall, this novel was romantic, hot, and laced with plenty of danger. I can’t say I’ve read a BDSM book before where the stakes were so high and each scene could be a matter of life or death. I recommend Risk Aware to anyone who enjoys BDSM, medical play, and m/m romance.

RATING: I loved it!
