REVIEW:

This book was a wonderful adventure. The story begins as Jem and Ilyas are traveling by ship to Ilyas’s homeland in attempt to secure a trade deal and bring back money to feed Jem’s starving people. However, Ilyas’s brother who sold him out has been consolidating his power in Ilyas’s absense. To complicate things even more, Jem realizes he’s still being haunted by the dark god. While they struggle to overcome the political fallout of Ilyas’s return, the couple finds themselves moving further and further apart from one another. It seems through Jem’s insecurities and Ilyas’s desire to keep his family safe from the dark god that they’ll never come together again.

Immortal Watch is filled with twists and turns, as well as fantastic magic, and was a virtual roller coaster for the characters. The adventure never stops, which made the book exciting and engaging. Jem is a bit twisted in a ways, but I loved his vulnerabilities in this book. Despite things seeming wholly impossible for Jem and Ilyas to work out, I was very pleased with the ending. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves MM Dark Fantasy.

Excerpt

Ilyas cocked his head. “Is something wrong?”
I breathed deep to avoid stuttering. “What would be wrong?”
“Just that I miss that smile of yours.” Ilyas smiled in turn.
For a heartbeat, I expected him to clasp my cheek, to draw me close, to envelop me in an embrace, to kiss me breathless, like he had when I had awoken to find myself his tawam rohi . Ilyas closed the display box and returned it to the drawer under the berth.
I exhaled. Of course not. Ilyas had promised to teach me all about kissing, and more, but he’d spoken in the heat of the moment when I’d awoken. Perhaps the fantasy of teaching me excited him more than the reality. My stomach sank.
After all, I wasn’t a eunuch. When Ilyas had still been the prince heir of Nuriya, his harem full of buxom ladies and eager lads, the male form hadn’t seemed to displease him. So long as they were eunuchs, not proper men, as Nuriyite decorum dictated. Nuriyites heaped rules upon everything from eating to sex. Lumians didn’t care, especially when sex wouldn’t provide more mouths to feed.
Or perhaps the fault lay in me, as a person.
Ilyas sank onto the berth with a big sigh. His features seemed drawn and stressed. I perched on the bed next to him, reaching to pet his hair. He groaned, and I froze.
I wanted more. I wanted to learn how to kiss. I wanted to learn how to wrap my thighs around his waist. I wanted—
“It will be fine, Jem,” he said.
I never used to be so selfish. He shouldered the fate of Lumi, and I couldn’t help him. All I did was lie wide awake at night, planning to demand more from him, planning to distract him.
“We can play a game of Go,” he said. “And I will wipe the deck with you this time.”
“Like the last eleven times?” I teased him.
“This one is my game.”

Meet the Author

Olivia Helling doesn’t believe in love at first sight… but maybe, just maybe, it blossoms along a few books. That is, after all, how she fell in love with her husband.

Olivia writes about the darkness and flaws from within, the struggle with self-confidence, self-perception and fear of failure, and fantasy and historical worlds that refuse to allow love between men. So be warned: happily ever after is not guaranteed.

The protagonist and love interest don’t always end up together by the end of one book. But when they finally come together, their love will be a thing of beauty.

TITLE: Blood Oath Blood Oath

SERIES:  Cursed #1

AUTHOR:  Olivia Helling

PUBLISHER: Self Published

LENGTH: 291 Pages

BLURB:

His sins may end up killing him. But which sins will they be…

Daniel Travere is a failure in his father’s eyes. Gaining his father’s love is going to take more than getting into the famed Sorcerer’s Guild. He knows he’ll also need to stamp out his most forbidden sin of all: loving other men.

Partnered with the perfect Valere Braud for an initiation project, Daniel must fight off dreams of kissing his handsome partner. When Daniel learns that Valere has sins of his own, including laying with other men and consorting with the god-cursed vampires, he’s pulled into a world that could ruin the lives of everyone he loves.

Daniel has a choice: shatter his life to get his father’s approval or confront his fear and claim his true destiny.

Blood Oath is a gay dark fantasy novel set in a world where homosexuality and vampires are equally scorned. If you like dark fantasy creatures, steampunk settings, and endings you don’t see coming, then you’ll love Olivia Helling’s dark novel of desperation, obsession, and hope.

REVIEW:

Daniel is struggling to do his best in school. His biggest desire is to get into the sorcerer’s guild and make his father proud. However, his fear of disappointing his father is not his only worry. Daniel is also afflicted with a desire for another of his classmates, Valere, who happens to be a man. Daniel cannot stand the thought of failing nor can he endure being labeled a sodomite. However, when events move Daniel and Valere closer to one another, Daniel’s troubles multiply.

What I loved the most about this book was the very dark atmosphere. I rarely read books that can pull that off, but darkness the author creates was literally chilling. Though blood Oath starts off in a sorcery class, I was surprised when vampires come into the picture. I was particularly fond of the sexual tension in the beginning, and was thrilled with the action packed ending. There were also some parts that were somewhat shocking considering the tone of the book leading up to the events. If this book were to have any warning, it would be that it should be considered suspense/fantasy rather than romance. Daniel’s character seemed very real to me and I commend the decisions he makes which I can’t go into without giving spoilers. Overall, this was an awesome read.

REVIEW:

Snowmancer was an entertaining and moving dark fantasy read. The story begins when Prince Ilyas is captured and brought to a neighboring kingdom, which is in a barren frozen wasteland. Since Ilyas has grown up with every luxury imaginable, he has a hard time believing that all that they have to feed him is hard, stale bread. Though he is upset with his circumstances, Ilyas becomes entranced with his captor, Jem. The more he learns about Jem, the more he forgets about his own discomforts. Over time, Jem seems to change something fundamental in Ilyas. Even though the Dark God is an ever present danger, Ilyas struggles to prevail for reasons far bigger than the preservation of his life.

I loved the world building in this book and I especially enjoyed the change in Ilyas’s character. Ilyas starts off as a prince who is arrogant and used to having his way. He has trouble recognizing the suffering and hunger of the people around him and only realizes their suffering when it is pointed out to him. However, as the book progresses and Ilyas starts to fall for Jem, Ilyas becomes less self-centered. There is finally someone in the world that he cares for more than himself. I think that change was what really drew me in. I went from wishing bad things on Ilyas to rooting for him. Though I loved the dark world the author creates, I was a little thrown off by the magical aspects and especially the magic used in the end. Even though this threw me for a loop, it didn’t take away from the story in any way. I recommend Snowmancer to anyone who loves M/M dark fantasy, M/M Slave themes, & M/M Romance.
