Review: Puppy by R. Phoenix #MM #DarkErotica #Dystopia

TITLE: Puppy Puppy

AUTHOR:  R. Phoenix

PUBLISHER: Self-Published

LENGTH: 61 Pages

BLURB:

While other vampires glut themselves on the rewards of a world where humans are little more than food or entertainment, Liam has found himself bored with the new status quo. An attempt to alleviate his boredom brings him to Caleb, a man who’s willing to do what it takes to get out of the slums–even if it means becoming something less than human.

REVIEW:

This was a short but delicious story. Since I’ve read a few of the author’s books set in the same world, it was very easy for me to fall into this book. Puppy begins with the four hundred-year-old vampire, Liam, out on the prowl for something to fit his tastes. In his world, human’s have pretty much lost their appeal, but when he finds Caleb, he sees the potential in him. Though Caleb is bisexual and a top when it comes to men, he’s quite turned on by all the demeaning things Liam wants to do to him.

Though I’m not that into puppy play, the way R. Phoenix presents it in this book makes it very appealing. I like that how Caleb is taken without given a choice about it, but he’s not so reluctant because everything Liam does to him is so arousing. Overall, this story was great. I was a little bit surprised when it ended, so my only complaint is that I wanted to see more of them together. I recommend this book to anyone who loves M/M Dark Erotica and fantasy.

BLURB:

Only one thing can keep Ashton safe from the supernatural predators who made the world into their depraved, twisted playground after the Takeover–but it’s the one thing that would steal the last remnants of his freedom. At every turn, society confronts Reese and Ashton with the way humans are treated as mere playthings to be used and discarded. When they realize their own desires and pride have no place in the status quo, Ashton and his werewolf lover understand they’ll have to engage in the deadly games played by those in charge if they want to make a difference.

But Reese isn’t a diplomat, and Ash is only human. REVIEW:

Temper was full of action and the type of absolute craziness that I really love. Though I enjoyed revisiting Ash and Reece, I was a bit dismayed by the extremely brutal way the book begins with Ash paying the price for his ignorance/independence. However, I think the pain he suffers was necessary way for him to wake up and realize the danger of their situation. Throughout the book there are appearances of the other characters from the previous books in the series. I really liked this since the other books read like stand-alones and this book seemed to be where their worlds collided. There were also some new and extremely intriguing characters as well as a deeper look into Elias’s motives and history. I really look forward to seeing where Elias goes with his plotting, and what kind of messed up torture schemes he has stashed away for later.

Despite all the violence and humiliation the characters have to endure, I really loved that Ash and Reece achieve a victory in the end.  Overall, the book was a win for me, and I’m very curious to know what happens next in this series. I recommend this series to anyone who likes MM Dark Erotica, Dark Fantasy, and MM Romance.

Elias Ivers was promised a slave recently captured from the Rebellion, and it would have only been a matter of time before the witch broke a mere human. However, when Malkhaz takes what should have rightfully been his in a single hasty decision, Elias is determined to make the vampire pay. No one denies an Ivers witch what he wants-especially not someone who’s little more than dirt beneath his expensive shoes.

REVIEW:

This book was amazingly and extremely vicious. I loved the last book, but this is definitely my favorite in the series so far. I don’t really know how to review it without giving away too much since the book starts out with a surprise. So, I’ll just say that things get pretty dark for some of the characters in previous books. I imagined it was dark for them already, but their situation just gets worse before it gets better. Elias takes his sadism to an entirely new level in this installment, making an already tricky social situation impossible. I probably couldn’t get more cryptic with this review, but just expect a lot of mind fucks, non-con, and angst. Really, Elias is such an ass, I’m just waiting for him to get a taste of his own medicine. I recommend this book to anyone who likes m/m dark erotica.

Note: This isn’t a standalone. It must be read in order or nothing will make sense.

RATING: Crazy about it!

About the Author

R. Phoenix has an unhealthy fascination with contrasts: light and dark, heroes and villains, order and chaos. She believes that love can corrupt and power can redeem. Her muse is a sadomasochistic slave driver who thinks it’s terribly amusing to give her the best ideas when she just got comfortable and warm in bed, and she passes on that torture to her readers.

If she had it her way, she would describe the books in her “Ripples in the Status Quo” world as: “Supernatural creatures take over the world and turn humans into pets and food. There’s some sex between guys. And… um… effed up things happen.” It’s probably a good thing she has people around her to remind her that she actually wants people to read her books. (They should really be more diligent, especially when they know she’s writing her author bio.)

She’s an author, stay-at-home mother, housewife, second time college student, and duck herder extraordinaire. She’s learning how to cook without burning the house down, her garden is somehow neither drowning nor drying up, and one day she might remember what that mythical thing called “free time” is. She’s starting to wonder who thought it was a good idea to write bios in third person.

She also tries entirely too hard to be funny, and she mercilessly inflicts her terrible sense of humor upon anyone who speaks to her. Really, it’s not you. It’s her. All the same, she’d love it if you’d say hello, because it makes her day to hear that someone read something she wrote. If they enjoyed it, there’s usually an awkward happy dance and embarrassing sounds of joy to accompany it (no, not that kind of sound, you perv). BLURB:

Over the past decade, Khaz has watched as supernatural creatures like himself have turned the world into their own personal playground. Unlike the others, he didn’t benefit from the Takeover, and every time he sells himself to keep a roof over his head, he’s keenly aware of that fact. His landlord, a renowned slaver, offers him the chance to catch up on his rent by breaking a human.

Groomed to fight, Noah has survived by giving himself over to his hatred of those who took everything away from humanity. When the werewolf can’t break him, he’s given to the vampire instead-and he’s sure this will be no different. The problem is that even the harsh lessons the Rebellion taught him couldn’t prepare him for someone like Khaz…who always has an ace up his sleeve.

REVIEW:

Beautiful and tragic. The world is the same as in the first part of the series, but this time the characters are Khaz, a vampire who trains human slaves, and Noah, a human who has been captured and must be prepared for his new role serving supernaturals. ThoughKhaz has trained many humans before, Noah is a fighter who is far from being submissive and Khaz tires of breaking humans, especially when he finds the fight in Noah so attractive. Khaz dreams of being able to keep the human instead of breaking his will for his supernatural masters; however, Khaz can barely afford his rent, let alone paying to house a human.

I loved this dark romantic fantasy. When Khaz and Noah come together its like magic. Khaz has the power to make any human addicted to him, but the attraction between the two is enough that he doesn’t need to use his powers. Khaz is given full control over the human and has every right to do whatever he wants to him, but the fact is that Khaz’s conscience won’t let him do it makes him very likable. Though this romance was quite dark, I want to have hope for them. I look forward to reading the upcoming installments in this series, and I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that I’ll see Noah and Khaz again. I recommend this book to anyone who loves m/m dark romance and m/m vampire fantasy.

LENGTH: 81 Pages

BLURB:

For the past few years, Reese has hidden away in his home, refusing to venture out where he might have to face what reminds him of all that he’s lost. When Ashton, a human thief, breaks into his home one night, he doesn’t have a choice but to face the harsh truths of the world he’s turned his back on. He knows he supports the society monsters of myth and lore built upon the backs of humans through his silence, but the new leaders don’t tolerate sympathizers.

If a werewolf can’t act against the status quo without facing severe consequences, a human with Ashton’s cunning and experience circumventing supernatural predators certainly can’t risk drawing their attention. Their chance encounter leaves them both shaken and questioning whether they are living life as they were intended—or if surviving is really living at all.

Ravel is approximately 23,600 words (excluding front/back matter).

The Ripples in the Status Quo works are set within a world where supernatural beings seized control from humans and relegated them to the bottom of the food chain. Used for food, entertainment, and worse, nothing protects them from the hands of those who claim them as slaves. But not everyone adheres to the status quo the world at large has accepted…

Please note that the RISQ world has little place for humanity–and the author’s idea of romance may not match yours. As such, there are no guarantees of happily ever afters, and content may be offensive to some readers.

REVIEW:

Supernatural beings have taken over, and by virtue of being human, Ashton is forced to live in the slums where he has to steal for food. The book begins when Ashton goes into a supernatural neighborhood and enters a house with the intention of steeling something so he could get enough money to help his sick friend. However, before he can make it out of the house, he’s caught by a werewolf named Reece. Ashton knows he’s in grave danger, and though it’s wrong, he cannot help but be drawn to the sexy werewolf. When Reece shows Ashton kindness instead of striking him down or enslaving him, Ashton is drawn to him even more. Though loving one another is breaking every law in their world where humans are lower than dirt, it doesn’t stop them from falling into each other’s arms.

This book was a fantastic shifter romance. I especially loved the torturous world they exist in. Everything has crumbled for humans—their rights are taken and many are forced into slavery. I like how Ashton’s desperation feels so real, and how despite loosing everything, he still has not lost his will to fight. Even when faced with a being that could crush him, he is still courageous. He has the strength to realize he doesn’t have to hate Reece due to what other supernaterals did to him and the human race. Ashton and Reece should be enemies with no compassion for one another, but Reece’s kindness wins Ashton over. Overall, this book was dark, but also extremely moving and romantic. I recommend Ravel to anyone who loves dystopia, m/m romance, and m/m shifter fantasy.

REVIEW:

Bought is a short, twisted tale about a wolf shifter, Jace, who finds himself in the hands of his enemies. Jace quickly learns his place as the play thing and pet of a witch who uses his magic to make Jace suffer in ways he would never imagine. The witch takes full possession of Jace’s body, reducing him to a quivering mess until he finds himself submitting more than his body.

I enjoyed the glimpse into Jace’s world. The story revolves around his capture and initial hazing by the witch. There was some pretty harsh humiliation in this book; mostly due to Jace’s image of himself and what he imagined he would and wouldn’t do. I cringed a little with the tail scene, but overall it was pretty hot. I loved the edging and how Jace eventually begged for it. I look forward to reading what happens next in this series.
