Review: Prince Lestat (The Vampire Chronicles #11) by Anne Rice

Prince Lestat (The Vampire Chronicles, #11)TITLE: Prince Lestat

SERIES:  The Vampire Chronicles #11

AUTHOR:  Anne Rice

PUBLISHER: Random House LLC

LENGTH: 458

BLURB:

The vampire world is in crisis – their kind have been proliferating out of control and, thanks to technologies undreamed of in previous centuries, they can communicate as never before. Roused from their earth-bound slumber, ancient ones are in thrall to the Voice: which commands that they burn fledgling vampires in cities from Paris to Mumbai, Hong Kong to Kyoto and San Francisco. Immolation, huge massacres, have commenced all over the world.

Who – or what – is the Voice? What does it desire, and why?

There is only one vampire, only one blood drinker, truly known to the entire world of the Undead. Will the dazzling hero-wanderer, the dangerous rebel-outlaw Lestat heed the call to unite the Children of Darkness as they face this new twilight?

Anne Rice’s epic, luxuriant, fiercely ambitious new novel brings together all the worlds and beings of the legendary Vampire Chronicles, from present-day New York and Ancient Egypt to fourth-century Carthage and Renaissance Venice; from Louis de Pointe du Lac; Armand the eternally young; Mekare and Maharet; to Pandora and Flavius; David Talbot, vampire and ultimate fixer from the Secret Talamasca; and Marius, the true child of the Millennia. It also introduces many other seductive supernatural creatures, and heralds significant new blood.

REVIEW:

It’s been so long since I’ve read something from a mainstream author, but considering Anne Rice was my first experience with reading M/M, I’m always up for reading her books. However, it’s been so long since I read a book in her Vampire Chronicles that I felt a little bit lost at first. Despite not remembering everything from the previous books, there was enough recapping that I was able to follow the story completely. In fact, the first part of the book is mostly introducing a lot of vampires from earlier books as well as vampires new to this volume. I was quite fond of the story line with Lestat’s adoption of the mortal girl, Rose as well as some of the new vampire intros. Toward the middle of the book, they all come together to resolve the central issue, which is the voice and the strange mass killings of vampires happening all over the globe.

Overall, this book was great and would be a nice end to the series. Though it kept my interest and brought tears to my eyes more than once, it wasn’t spectacular and moving like some of the earlier chronicles. I guess this might be said of any book that is a wrap up type story, but another thing was that it was set in modern times which made it lack the romance of her earlier volumes. Overall, I think the biggest drawback was the slower pace, but with so many characters and so many converging story lines, it was to be expected. I guess reading this book was more of a nostalgia thing for me. I still love Anne Rice’s writing and see the appeal of the worlds she builds, but I’ve read so many awesome m/m authors since I first started this series that I think my tastes have changed. Her style of subtle sexuality was an excellent introduction to the world of m/m, but now I prefer more intense and erotically charged works. I guess I’ll have to go back and read some of my favorites from her in order to know for sure. For anyone who’s a fan of Anne Rice, I recommend reading this book. However, if you haven’t read her before, it’s best to start with the first few books in this series.

Don’t be Afraid of the Dark

Destiny is a strange thing. It can be fickle at times, and it can make you miss out on incredible connections that would set you on the journey of your lifetime. But the thing is, you’ll never know what you missed out on.

Sometimes Destiny takes pity on you and lets you meet the person you are supposed to, at just the right time. When Jensen first saw Liam, he lost his heart. Even if it took him a while to realize that. It’s okay, though. He had to grow and learn some more before he was the man Liam needed to save him from a life he was trapped in.

Supernatural forces collide to give Jensen the strength he needs to evolve into the man Liam waited his whole life for, and when their souls finally slam into each other, neither will be the same again.

Slave

It’s the worst feeling in the world, seeing him with someone else. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do, no limits I won’t go to get him back. But he won’t give me a chance. He won’t so much as look at me because he thinks I don’t belong to him anymore.
But that’s the whole thing.
I don’t belong anywhere.
Doesn’t matter where I go or who I am with I am always alone. There is something wrong with me, there has to be because no one else seems quite as miserable at being without a master.
But don’t we all owe our freedom to something?
People are slaves, aren’t they? To their jobs, to their partners, to their children, even to their lifestyles?
We all have those little kinks that we don’t tell anyone about, because we think we’re going to be judged for them, and because we’re slaves to society’s rules.
In a world where slavery is the norm I’m a slave to my needs.
To him.
And I need to get him back.

WARNINGS: HARDCORE BDSM, DUB-CON, NON-CON

Sin

Samuel “Sin” Taylor doesn’t know the difference between sex and intimacy, but maybe that’s not his fault. He grew up in a world where it was easier to get physical pleasure than to find love. But as a prostitute working the streets, Sin thinks he’s finally found his true calling. After all sex is the one thing he’s good at, right? But when Isaac enters his life through mere coincidence, Sin finds it a relief to be someone other than Sin.

How long can he keep up the charade?

WARNINGS: DUB-CON, NON-CON, ABUSE, VIOLENCE, DRUG USE

Fugue

Ever felt like the world thinks you’re crazy? Welcome to my world. I tried normal, but eventually the truth catches up to you. Thank God for Evan, he believes me. But no man is a saint, and eventually the stories of aliens and tentacles and kidnappings just become too much for anyone to believe anymore.

But I know what happened. I know what they did to me. The voices are calling me back now. They’re calling me to be with her, my daughter. And I can’t resist it anymore.

REVIEW:

Kol starts out gently, his voice like a lover’s tempting whisper in the dark. His poetry sets the stage for what will be four very different stories within an extremely well-written anthology, and the tone carries on throughout. There’s desperation and hope, desolation and solace; there’s pain and relief, peace and terror. It all goes on through these pages. There are similarities in the four stories, but overall, they couldn’t be more different.

There’s an almost dreamlike quality to these stories, something that lures you in and refuses to let you go until the end. I found myself highlighting line after line of beautiful words that appealed to me and I wanted to remember.

In Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, we get a taste of the paranormal set against the backdrop of a world that seems grim for the characters involved. I want to know more about the characters and the world; my only complaint is that I’m not a huge fan of insta-love angles. But this line: “I don’t need you to feel sorry for me, that’s not what I want. I want you to love me” more than made up for it.

Slave follows the path of a broken-hearted sub whose master turned his back on him, and he tries to find solace anywhere and everywhere he can. There’s a surreal feeling to the entire peace, as though I’m in a dream that I can’t fully awake from. I’m not sure what I like better — the opening poem or the story itself. I loved Jesse, and everything he did felt real throughout the entire piece.

And then there was Sin. Sin isn’t for the faint of heart — and while I don’t consider myself particularly faint of heart, I think mine broke all the same. Those with issues involving incest and rape should steer clear of this one completely. There’s just enough hope to keep my heart from being completely crushed, but I noted at this point that the anthology is steadily darkening.

Finally, there’s Fugue. Fugue isn’t my type of story, but it’s an interesting one all the same. It follows a young man who believes he’s been tortured by aliens and his doctor, who’s desperate to help someone he feels has been failed by others. There are points where you can’t be sure if it’s a sci-fi short or a short on the effects of mental illness, but either way, the effect is profound.

Overall, the taboos mentioned in the tags and above are very much a present part of the stories, but they aren’t dwelled upon for too long. There’s just enough detail to let you know what’s going on, and then Anderson continues with the story: because this is all about the story, not the taboos.

Beautiful writing.

RATING: I loved it! (Even if it is going to haunt me for a while)

LENGTH: 96 Pages

BLURB:

Over the past decade, Khaz has watched as supernatural creatures like himself have turned the world into their own personal playground. Unlike the others, he didn’t benefit from the Takeover, and every time he sells himself to keep a roof over his head, he’s keenly aware of that fact. His landlord, a renowned slaver, offers him the chance to catch up on his rent by breaking a human.

Groomed to fight, Noah has survived by giving himself over to his hatred of those who took everything away from humanity. When the werewolf can’t break him, he’s given to the vampire instead-and he’s sure this will be no different. The problem is that even the harsh lessons the Rebellion taught him couldn’t prepare him for someone like Khaz…who always has an ace up his sleeve.

Revised & expanded edition as of 4/1/16. Please note that content, publisher, and other aspects of the work have changed.

REVIEW:

Beautiful and tragic. The world is the same as in the first part of the series, but this time the characters are Khaz, a vampire who trains human slaves, and Noah, a human who has been captured and must be prepared for his new role serving supernaturals. ThoughKhaz has trained many humans before, Noah is a fighter who is far from being submissive and Khaz tires of breaking humans, especially when he finds the fight in Noah so attractive. Khaz dreams of being able to keep the human instead of breaking his will for his supernatural masters; however, Khaz can barely afford his rent, let alone paying to house a human.

I loved this dark romantic fantasy. When Khaz and Noah come together its like magic. Khaz has the power to make any human addicted to him, but the attraction between the two is enough that he doesn’t need to use his powers. Khaz is given full control over the human and has every right to do whatever he wants to him, but the fact is that Khaz’s conscience won’t let him do it makes him very likable. Though this romance was quite dark, I want to have hope for them. I look forward to reading the upcoming installments in this series, and I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that I’ll see Noah and Khaz again. I recommend this book to anyone who loves m/m dark romance and m/m vampire fantasy.

Synopsis

Orion is a vampire with a tragic past. After running away from abusive parents at the tender age of sixteen, he was turned by a ruthless elder vampire and forced to torture and sexually abuse human feeders and submissive vampires. Though that’s all behind him now, he still lives in the shadow of what he was, and it’s cost him the loyalty of Xavier, the human feeder he loves. Malagan is Orion’s closest friend–the vampire who saved him from brutality all those years ago. Malagan knows the dominant side of Orion–the side Xavier needs–is still there, lurking below the surface. But if Orion’s going to find his way back to who he ought to be, he’ll need help. And Malagan is just the man for the job.

Excerpt

Freak. The word went straight to Orion’s guts and set a shiver of hatred running up his spine. He pushed his shoulders back and stood taller, towering over Clay, but to no effect. Clay didn’t back down, didn’t turn away, didn’t show one single sign of submitting.

Clay laughed and snapped his fingers in Orion’s face. “Look at you. Size of a fucking giant, but the balls of a three year old. You’ve got no spine, Orion. You’re nothing but a simpering weakling who hides behind Malagan.” He turned away and moved to the bar.

“Don’t turn your back on me,” Orion warned, tempting fate.

“Why not?” Clay called over his shoulder. “What are you going to do about it? You going to beat me senseless and take what you want? That’s what you were good at, wasn’t it? Why don’t you come over here and try it, freak? That’s right, come on over here. I won’t even turn around. I’ll let you have the first hit. That’s all you need. Just that first hit to get you going. And then you’ll bloody me up, right?”

“I’ll do what I must to get Xavier away from you.” Orion took a deep breath and stood his ground, unmoving. He wasn’t about to back away, but he wouldn’t do anything rash either.

Clay rounded on Orion and smirked. “You don’t have the guts.”

The door opened behind them, and Orion turned to see Malagan standing in the opening. Elation and anger warred within him. He wanted to smile and gloat to Clay that now things would go his way, but another part of him hated Malagan for showing up, for stealing his thunder. For proving Clay right.

“He may not,” Malagan murmured. “But I do.” He swiveled his head to look at Orion, sent a knowing, compassionate look Orion’s way. “Xavier and I will meet you back at the lair.”

Heart pounding, Orion swallowed his pride and nodded. He left Clay’s house, the sounds of breaking glass and Clay’s yelling echoing down the path. He stopped at his car and turned back toward the house. This wasn’t Malagan’s fight — Malagan hadn’t started it, after all, and Malagan shouldn’t be the one finishing it. Orion took three steps up the path and froze as his guts knotted up and a wave of nausea assaulted him. Gagging, he pressed the back of his hand to his mouth and stumbled back, colliding with the front of the car.

Frustration tore at him. Self-loathing and worthlessness wrapped their claws around him and pulled him under. Orion whirled and brought both fists crashing down onto the hood of his car. Again and again, until he’d left a bloody dent. Exhausted, lightheaded, he straightened and choked on a throat full of tears as he ran his fingers over the ruined hood. Why did he break everything he touched?

For the past few years, Reese has hidden away in his home, refusing to venture out where he might have to face what reminds him of all that he’s lost. When Ashton, a human thief, breaks into his home one night, he doesn’t have a choice but to face the harsh truths of the world he’s turned his back on. He knows he supports the society monsters of myth and lore built upon the backs of humans through his silence, but the new leaders don’t tolerate sympathizers.

If a werewolf can’t act against the status quo without facing severe consequences, a human with Ashton’s cunning and experience circumventing supernatural predators certainly can’t risk drawing their attention. Their chance encounter leaves them both shaken and questioning whether they are living life as they were intended—or if surviving is really living at all.

REVIEW:

Supernatural beings have taken over, and by virtue of being human, Ashton is forced to live in the slums where he has to steal for food. The book begins when Ashton goes into a supernatural neighborhood and enters a house with the intention of steeling something so he could get enough money to help his sick friend. However, before he can make it out of the house, he’s caught by a werewolf named Reece. Ashton knows he’s in grave danger, and though it’s wrong, he cannot help but be drawn to the sexy werewolf. When Reece shows Ashton kindness instead of striking him down or enslaving him, Ashton is drawn to him even more. Though loving one another is breaking every law in their world where humans are lower than dirt, it doesn’t stop them from falling into each other’s arms.

This book was a fantastic shifter romance. I especially loved the torturous world they exist in. Everything has crumbled for humans—their rights are taken and many are forced into slavery. I like how Ashton’s desperation feels so real, and how despite loosing everything, he still has not lost his will to fight. Even when faced with a being that could crush him, he is still courageous. He has the strength to realize he doesn’t have to hate Reece due to what other supernaterals did to him and the human race. Ashton and Reece should be enemies with no compassion for one another, but Reece’s kindness wins Ashton over. Overall, this book was dark, but also extremely moving and romantic. I recommend Ravel to anyone who loves dystopia, m/m romance, and m/m shifter fantasy.

BLURB:

I’ve been betrayed by someone I trusted. Because of him, I was captured by my loathed enemy: The vampires. Right now, the sun is still high in the sky, but I know when it sets, I’m as good as dead. They can’t wait to get their fangs into me. I guess some would say I have it coming. I did raise a lot of hell with my Resistance crew, and I was planning on raising a hell of a lot more at dawn before I was sold out by Jonah. The vampires, werewolves and dragons, have been trying to track me down for months and I’d always been two steps ahead of them.
*Laughs* I guess my number is up. I just hope they make it quick. You see, the vampires in my reality aren’t the romantic lot you read about in books. They don’t sparkle or hang out at high schools with their teenage girlfriends. Hell no, vampires are brutal, calculating, sadistic and bloodthirsty. As a matter of fact, all of the monsters are! That’s how they were able to take over the world so easily and change an entire civilization to suit their needs. Whatever happens, I know it’s not going to be pretty, so I’m preparing myself for the worst. May God help me.

Warning: This novelette series contains hardcore sexual situations between men, not meant for sensitive eyes. I’m talking crude, lewd and full of attitude. This series will most likely either offend you or get ya revved up. This series isn’t going to be pulling any punches whatsoever, so you’ve been warned. Mature Adult Content meant for readers looking for something dark, taboo, sexy, and unapologetic in their paranormal erotica. This is NOT a romance. This novelette is approximately 13300 words.

REVIEW:

The main character, Noel, is taken prisoner by a vampire named Theoden. Though Noel is straight and somewhat homophobic, Theoden turns him into a vampire, making him come and crave a male’s touch in the process. Noel is still put off by the idea of having sex with men, but his vampire captor lets him know, in somewhat violent terms, that Noel will be his play thing whether he likes it or not.

This was a small glimpse into Noel and Theoden’s world of vampires and other shifters. Though nothing much has happened so far, the author sets the stage for what seems like a lot of hurt and humiliation for Noel. I want to sympathize for Noel and his situation, but so far I am not too fond of him due to his homophobic statements and lack of emotion after the death of his friend. He is a fighter, which should be sexy, but at this point neither character seems particularly appealing to me. This might be because Noel hasn’t displayed any attraction toward Theoden. If anything, Theoden may be displaying lust toward Noel, but it mostly feels like cruelty. Since this book is just one episode, I imagine there will be some kind of attraction that builds between them in episodes to come. Overall, this was a dark and twisted tale, and I am curious to see what happens next in this series.

Angelus Salvatore is the only necromancer in all of Boston, and his name is whispered warily by the undead and fellow sorcerers alike. He and his brother Isaac are the lone survivors of an attack by an army of the undead, in which Angel used a spell so powerful it forever marked his place in history. Now, years later, Angel struggles to balance his career as a teacher of the higher magical arts, his role as big brother, and a tenuous relationship with an Elder vampire from the local clan. When his brother’s boyfriend is used as a pawn in a mysterious plot to draw Angel out, Angel is once again pulled back into the old hostilities that fueled the Blood Wars and led to his family’s death.

Leaning on others for help is something Angel cannot do, and while he searches for clues into who may be targeting him and his brother, Angel finds his heart steadily growing occupied with Simeon, Elder and vampire. Dealing with death magic and vampires on a daily basis may leave Angel jaded when it comes to life and staying that way, but the more time he spends fending off the ancient vampire’s attention and affections, the more he realizes he wants to give in.

Can Angel find out who wants him dead, and keep his heart safe in the process? How can he fall for a vampire, when his whole family was torn apart by an army of the undead?

Death stalks the streets of Boston’s historic Beacon Hill….and there is no one more suited to battle against death than a necromancer.

MATURE CONTENT Contains graphic violence, male/male sexual contact, a cranky necromancer, a sexy Irish vampire, and a pesky demon.

REVIEW:

The Necromancer’s Dance begins when the powerful necromancer, Angel, is attacked by several vampires in a bar. Angel’s slight build makes him seem at first glance like someone who can be dominated, but his magic is so strong that he can easily bring the vampires to their knees as well as take out everyone in the bar. However, before it gets to that point, the vampire elder, Simeon, comes forward to negotiate. Even though Angel doesn’t trust him entirely, Angel cannot hide his attraction to the vampire. When it becomes clear that someone with a grudge is out to kill Angel, they end up working together to uncover the mystery and confront the creature that wants Angel dead.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the writing engaging and I immediately loved the characters. I’m not usually fond of reading mysteries and detective books, but all the magic in this world drew me in from the start. I loved how Angel, a slight figured beauty, is so feared by all the vampires and how he’s confident in his ability to call the shots. At the same time, Simeon’s character is an extremely hot and debonair vampire. Considering their natures, they should be enemies, but instead they have sizzling chemistry and are perfect together. Overall, this book is great. This was the first thing I’ve read from SJ Himes, but I’ll definitely be reading more. I recommend this book to anyone who likes m/m romance and dark m/m fantasy with vampires, demons and necromancers.

Dead Camp Tour ~ Sean Kerr: Interview + Giveaway #Erotica #DarkFantasy #MMRomance

RC

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Sean Kerr author of Dead Camp.

Hi Sean, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Hello! Well, I’m a 46-year-old gay man living in Cardiff, Wales, with my partner of 27 years, Derek. Oh, and our two cats, Rita and Harry, and a load of tropical fish! I have worked in retail most of my life, and for the past 11 years, I have been running my own Interior Design business in Cardiff with my fabulous business partner, Jayne. I am a huge sci-fi and horror fan, Doctor Who being my first love in television, Alien my first love in film. Sigh. How I would love to write for both of them, but that is never going to happen, so move on lol.

Working for yourself, and trying to pay yourself, is not easy. Bit like being an author then lol. In an ideal world, I would love to see our shop run by someone else so that I could spend my days writing, but again that is just not going to happen. I love the design industry, I love working with fabrics and blinds, and helping our customers to create a beautiful home, but at the same time, I do not want to spend the rest of my life tied to our store. The recession hit 3 years after we opened and it has been a struggle, but we survived, and Jayne and I are proud of our achievement.

BadgeWriting has always been my passion. I never thought, never in a million years, that I would be published, and here I am with two books out, and I am now busy writing my third! When I started this series of books two years ago, I wrote to every agent in the Artists and Writers yearbook, and then some, well over 200 emails and letters, and I have a huge pile of ‘no’s’. I was on the verge of giving up. I knew my book was a bit fruity, I knew my book was contentious, but it was something I really wanted to write, and I loved every minute of writing it. Just when I thought there was no point in pursuing Dead Camp, I started to write something else, but then I thought I would try contacting some publishing houses direct. I contacted 6 publishers, and within two weeks had 3 offers of a contract! To say that I screamed a lot would be an understatement. I signed with the wonderful Extasy Books, and boy are they fabulous. My editors, cover designer, all of them, just wonderful, talented, incredibly supportive people, and I feel mighty privileged to be with them. I owe them everything, for making my dream come true, and I hope that we will be together for very, many years!

Dead Camp is a series of books, all with different stories that tell one big saga. As a gay man, I wanted to write it from a gay perspective, so all my characters are gay, well, except the odd one or two…spoilers sweetie. The series of books start during World War 2, and as they progress, you will find yourself in Victorian London, the Crucifixion, and then back to the downfall of Hitler. It’s a complex story, and every character is linked, even if they don’t know it. Book 1 & 2 are out, and I am currently working on book 3, which has been the toughest write so far. This book is proving particularly challenging because of the subject matter, but I think I have just broken the back of it, so now, with a bit of a push, I can finish the first draft.

When all is said and done, Dead Camp may contain Vampires, Ghosts, Demons and Angels, but ultimately, it is a story of a father’s forgiveness, and tolerance of that which is different, in a roundabout sort of way. I know the very last page of the very last book, it is there, in my many, many notes, and all I can say is, have a very large box of tissues at the ready!

  • Tell us about your book.

Dead Camp came out of my desire to tell a story about gay characters from the perspective of a gay man. It also grew out of my need to tell my version of the Vampire myth. It worried me that so many fantastic books about Vampires already exist, by authors far more talented than I, but I have always loved Vampires and I have always wanted to write about them, so Dead Camp is my own spin on a familiar subject.

Eli is a Vampire with no memory of being human, so this series of books is about his journey of discovery, about himself, and ultimately about the world in which he inhabits. The trouble is, his identity will have a huge impact on the rest of the characters. Lie after lie, secret after secret, and all of it to preserve his identity, and to hide it from him. The greatest love that he has ever known kept that secret, and lied about his own past in the process, so when this all starts to bleed out, Eli is thrown into a world, and a war, that he really would rather hide away from.  Book 1 is really about Eli having to re-engage with the world, and book 2, the consequences of allowing himself to feel again. Some truths are better left buried, and some truths are just too painful to learn.

  • How difficult was it to get into the main character’s head?Banner300x250

I loved writing Eli. Once I decided that he was going to be a rude, rough, dirty son of a bitch, his voice came relatively easy. Because I had the plot of the books written out in detail, and because I knew exactly where each scene and each chapter needed to start and end, his voice very quickly asserted itself. I tried a number of passes at the prologue, and when I hit on the tone that felt good, I was away.

  • Is this book a standalone or do you plan on visiting it again?

Dead Camp was planned as a series right from the start. It is a huge historical saga that spans a number of historical events, so I knew it would have to be a number of books, with each event taking place within its own novel, and each novel linked to the other by these events and characters. Things mentioned in book 1 or 2, will not pay off until book 3, and then it will all start to come together in the last two novels. The last book. What can I say about the last book in the series? The plan is to make the reader cry like a baby. That is all I can say. Spoilers sweetie.

  • Why did you choose to write M/M stories?

When I started writing, I did not realise it was M/M. What I mean by that, is that until the first book was published, and I started to meet all these fantastic people on Facebook groups, I did not realise that M/M was a genre in its own right. What I started out to do, and what I am still doing, is to write a book about gay men, from a gay perspective, because that is all I know how to write. I am a gay man writing for gay people. One of the most surprising things I have realised about this genre, is the readership of such books. I wrote Dead Camp because I wanted to write something as a gay man, from a gay perspective, for gay people. Yet, this genre, M/M romance, gay fiction, whatever you may call it, is read by a huge, enormous readership of wonderful, supportive, and very kind women. Married women with children, single women, just lots of fantastic women. I had no idea. When my Facebook presence began to grow, it was only then that I realised this fact, and I have met so very many wonderful women who have really enjoyed my books, and who really love this genre of M/M fiction, and that surprised me more than anything. I assumed, stupidly, that I was writing for a primarily gay audience. WRONG! And I am so glad, because I have now been accepted into a world that I never knew existed, and I love it, and I love the people who inhabit it.

  • Where do you find your inspiration?

Film, television, and documentaries continue to be a great source of inspiration. I love the Discovery channel. I once watched a documentary about Hitler and his obsession with the occult. That made something in my head explode, and before I knew it, I had the outline of Dead Camp plotted. Also, as I work through an idea, other ones present themselves. Sometimes they fit, sometimes they have to be put away for another book. When an idea hits me, I write it down, and then I start to write around it, play with it, and see where it leads me. Dead Camp presented a series of strong ideas, and once I realised that they could all be linked, that there was an entire series of possibilities, I was at my computer writing furiously.

I recently finished reading a book, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, and I consider that book to be the true successor to Stoker’s Dracula. However, as I was reading it, another idea hit me, albeit one that does not involve Vampires. Her style of writing, and the way she tells her story, got me to thinking about how I could tell a story in a slightly different way, and then I realised that I had the outline for a completely new book. So I wrote it down, put it in my file, and that will be my project once Dead Camp is finished.

MEET THE AUTHOR

I think that as I approach that milestone that is fifty, I must be one of the oldest
gamers on the face of this earth. Many a day you will find me lashed to my PS4 enjoying a good session of Skyrim. Who doesn’t love a good session of Skyrim?
I love writing—I have done it since I was a child when I would happily write about the latest episode of Doctor Who (Tom Baker in those days) in my schoolbooks. Growing up and becoming a business owner with my friend Jayne left little time to pursue my dream of publication, but of late the desire and the compulsion to put words onto paper have once again dominated my life so that now, my laptop has become surgically fused to my fingertips.
There is something desperately satisfying about telling a story. My fascination with 11885361_402721776518984_2536003115138179722_nHistory, Religion and Conspiracy theories have, in this instance, gone hand-in-hand with my love of all things vampire, fantasy, sci-fi and horror. I drove my parents nuts when I was young because that was all I would read about in books, all I would watch on television, but they have held me in good stead, and long may my obsession with the subjects continue, at least, that is, until the day they put me in my own wooden box. And imagination is such a wonderful thing. I once had a rather vivid dream about David Tennant and the Tardis console, but I could not possibly go into details about that here. Let’s just say that my polarity was well and truly reversed.
Dead Camp is just the beginning. I have to check my knickers every day at the thought that this book is now in the public domain. My first book, and I hope the first of many. And to those out there who love to write, who love to transport us to new worlds, or old worlds with a twisted perspective, I say to you keep going. I never thought I would ever see my work available to download, and thanks to eXtasy Books, the dream that I always thought unobtainable has finally come true. So thank you all at eXtasy, I am one happy homosexual thanks to you, and thank you the reader for taking the time to read this strange tale and allowing Eli and the incomparable Malachi into your lives.
And now I really need Skyrim.

Review: Deep Desire (The Deep Series #1) by Z.A. Maxfield #MMFantasy

TITLE: Deep DesireDeep Desire (Deep, #1)

SERIES: The Deep Series #1

AUTHOR: Z.A. Maxfield

PUBLISHER: Samhain Publishing, Ltd

LENGTH: 202 Pages

BLURB:

There’s no leverage like seduction…until love takes a bite of his plans.

Deep, Book 1

As the Indiana Jones of historical erotica, there is no document existing—or just rumored to exist—Adin Tredeger can’t unearth. Why he would risk the biggest coup of his career to join the mile-high club is beyond him. But the disarming, dark-eyed man who somehow enters Adin’s locked airplane washroom has him completely nude and coming apart. All without a whimper of protest.

From that moment, Adin and Donte Fedelta engage in an international battle of wit and cunning. The prize—a priceless, 500-year-old journal with illustrations so erotic it could make the Marquis de Sade blush.

Yet Donte’s desire for the journal goes far beyond simple possession. The undead nobleman wrote it. And he’s not above using every trick in his otherworldly arsenal—including seduction—to get it back.

Chemistry draws them together even as fortune tugs them apart. But when a third party joins the chase, they must unite to fight an enemy with a deadly goal—to erase Donte from history.

This book is a rerelease of a previously published book, with substantial rewrites. This title was originally released as Notturno

Warning: This product contains one cocky college professor, one centuries-old vampire who is out to show him who’s at the top of the food chain, and red wine. Because it goes so well with humble pie.

REVIEW:

Adin is transporting a rare and valuable erotic book. When he boards an airplane he is accosted by a gorgeous man named Dante in the bathroom. Dante is very forward and after taking him in the small cramped space, bites him, and informs him of his intentions to take the book. Adin later learns that Dante is a vampire and also the author of the book. Despite the drama and danger Dante brings his way, Adin finds himself falling for his new vampire friend.

I enjoyed this book. I liked Adin’s character and I loved the idea of an immortal author coming to claim his property. Though I wasn’t particularly moved by the relationship between Adin and Dante, I was pleased with the emotional happy ending. This is the first book I’ve read by Z.A. Maxfield and I’ll certainly read more. I recommend this book to anyone who loves dark fantasy with vampires.

I received a copy of this book from Indigo Marketing in exchange for an honest review.

RATING: I liked it!

Jeremy has been isolated and adrift since the death of his brother. Most people just see him as the skinny emo kid who wears eyeliner and plays drums. No one gets him. Nobody tries. He thought the indie rock band Stygian would become his anchor, but—lost in their own problems—they’re far from the family he sought.

Still, hoping to get close to Kennedy, the band’s enigmatic guitarist, he follows Stygian to northern Louisiana for a summer retreat. They had planned to spend six weeks focusing on new music, but things go awry as soon as they arrive at the long-deserted Caroway mansion. Tempers flare, sexual tension boils over into frustration, and Jeremy turns away from the band to find a friend in his eerily beautiful landlord Hunter Caroway.

Kennedy suspects there’s something off about the creepy mansion and its mysterious owners, but Jeremy thinks he’s finally found somewhere he fits. It isn’t until Kennedy forces the Caroways’ secrets into the light that Jeremy realizes belonging sometimes comes with a price.

 ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Santino Hassell was raised by a conservative family, but he was anything but traditional. He grew up to be a smart-mouthed, school cutting grunge kid, then a transient twenty-something, and eventually transformed into an unlikely romance author.

Santino writes queer romance that is heavily influenced by the gritty, urban landscape of New York City, his belief that human relationships are complex and flawed, and his own life experiences.
