Don’t be Afraid of the Dark

Destiny is a strange thing. It can be fickle at times, and it can make you miss out on incredible connections that would set you on the journey of your lifetime. But the thing is, you’ll never know what you missed out on.

Sometimes Destiny takes pity on you and lets you meet the person you are supposed to, at just the right time. When Jensen first saw Liam, he lost his heart. Even if it took him a while to realize that. It’s okay, though. He had to grow and learn some more before he was the man Liam needed to save him from a life he was trapped in.

Supernatural forces collide to give Jensen the strength he needs to evolve into the man Liam waited his whole life for, and when their souls finally slam into each other, neither will be the same again.

Slave

It’s the worst feeling in the world, seeing him with someone else. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do, no limits I won’t go to get him back. But he won’t give me a chance. He won’t so much as look at me because he thinks I don’t belong to him anymore.
But that’s the whole thing.
I don’t belong anywhere.
Doesn’t matter where I go or who I am with I am always alone. There is something wrong with me, there has to be because no one else seems quite as miserable at being without a master.
But don’t we all owe our freedom to something?
People are slaves, aren’t they? To their jobs, to their partners, to their children, even to their lifestyles?
We all have those little kinks that we don’t tell anyone about, because we think we’re going to be judged for them, and because we’re slaves to society’s rules.
In a world where slavery is the norm I’m a slave to my needs.
To him.
And I need to get him back.

WARNINGS: HARDCORE BDSM, DUB-CON, NON-CON

Sin

Samuel “Sin” Taylor doesn’t know the difference between sex and intimacy, but maybe that’s not his fault. He grew up in a world where it was easier to get physical pleasure than to find love. But as a prostitute working the streets, Sin thinks he’s finally found his true calling. After all sex is the one thing he’s good at, right? But when Isaac enters his life through mere coincidence, Sin finds it a relief to be someone other than Sin.

How long can he keep up the charade?

WARNINGS: DUB-CON, NON-CON, ABUSE, VIOLENCE, DRUG USE

Fugue

Ever felt like the world thinks you’re crazy? Welcome to my world. I tried normal, but eventually the truth catches up to you. Thank God for Evan, he believes me. But no man is a saint, and eventually the stories of aliens and tentacles and kidnappings just become too much for anyone to believe anymore.

But I know what happened. I know what they did to me. The voices are calling me back now. They’re calling me to be with her, my daughter. And I can’t resist it anymore.

WARNINGS: ABUSE, SELF HARM, OFF PAGE NON-CON AND KIDNAPPING, VIOLENCE

REVIEW:

Kol starts out gently, his voice like a lover’s tempting whisper in the dark. His poetry sets the stage for what will be four very different stories within an extremely well-written anthology, and the tone carries on throughout. There’s desperation and hope, desolation and solace; there’s pain and relief, peace and terror. It all goes on through these pages. There are similarities in the four stories, but overall, they couldn’t be more different.

There’s an almost dreamlike quality to these stories, something that lures you in and refuses to let you go until the end. I found myself highlighting line after line of beautiful words that appealed to me and I wanted to remember.

In Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, we get a taste of the paranormal set against the backdrop of a world that seems grim for the characters involved. I want to know more about the characters and the world; my only complaint is that I’m not a huge fan of insta-love angles. But this line: “I don’t need you to feel sorry for me, that’s not what I want. I want you to love me” more than made up for it.

Slave follows the path of a broken-hearted sub whose master turned his back on him, and he tries to find solace anywhere and everywhere he can. There’s a surreal feeling to the entire peace, as though I’m in a dream that I can’t fully awake from. I’m not sure what I like better — the opening poem or the story itself. I loved Jesse, and everything he did felt real throughout the entire piece.

And then there was Sin. Sin isn’t for the faint of heart — and while I don’t consider myself particularly faint of heart, I think mine broke all the same. Those with issues involving incest and rape should steer clear of this one completely. There’s just enough hope to keep my heart from being completely crushed, but I noted at this point that the anthology is steadily darkening.

Finally, there’s Fugue. Fugue isn’t my type of story, but it’s an interesting one all the same. It follows a young man who believes he’s been tortured by aliens and his doctor, who’s desperate to help someone he feels has been failed by others. There are points where you can’t be sure if it’s a sci-fi short or a short on the effects of mental illness, but either way, the effect is profound.

Overall, the taboos mentioned in the tags and above are very much a present part of the stories, but they aren’t dwelled upon for too long. There’s just enough detail to let you know what’s going on, and then Anderson continues with the story: because this is all about the story, not the taboos.

Beautiful writing.

RATING: I loved it! (Even if it is going to haunt me for a while)

Book Review: Every Good Thing by M Jules Aedin

TITLE:     Every Good ThingEvery Good Thing

AUTHOR:     M Jules Aedin

PUBLISHER:     MLR Press LLC

LENGTH:     246 Pages

BLURB:

Raised in a strict religion that forbids association with foreigners as well as love between men, Arieh Sef’ea cannot imagine a worse fate than to be sold as a love-slave to a Keshen soldier. Both men must learn that bodies may be purchased, but hearts must be won.

REVIEW:

This book begins with Arieh being auctioned off as a slave. Enitan is a Keshan soldier, but when he sees Arieh, he knows he’s the perfect one to be his lover and he buys him. Though Enitan has other slaves, Arieh is special and a challenge. Arieh holds a firm belief that two men together is wrong, but Enitan cannot be with him until Arieh falls in love with him.

First of all, book was recommended to me by someone in the Goodreads GLBT Fantasy group. I’m definitely glad I read it, but it was very hard for me to swallow the beginning. I felt so bad for Arieh and I really disliked his master; not because he was cruel, but just for his impatience and for the simple fact that he owned slaves. However, over time I grew to respect his choices and began to like him. This situation is very similar to many arranged marriages in the Middle East where the woman often has no choice about her husband. The man must pay a bride price for her, and then she is delivered to him on their wedding night. The difference between those marriages and this story is that the men in arranged marriages rarely have patience with the girl. They take her to their bed the first night. So in the world M. Jules has created, Enitan is following the rules of society and is so very kind to his beloved (although purchased) spouse Arieh. Aside from the love affair, the intrigue in this story built and kept me interested until the end.

RATING: I liked it!

Book Review: Bloodraven by PL Nunn

TITLE:     BloodravenBloodraven

AUTHOR:     PL Nunn

PUBLISHER:     Pam Nunnally

LENGTH:     663 Pages

BLURB:

A son of a forest dwelling people, Yhalen knows little of the world outside the ancestral forest, until he is captured by a band of ogres on a slave-taking mission. Only grim tales of the barbaric giants had reached the forest, but Yhalen soon learns that even the darkest fireside story only hinted at the brutality of these Northern warriors. He discovers the meaning of true fear at their hands, and only the awakening of ancient magic saves him from destruction. Surviving ogre viciousness, he finds himself given to Bloodraven, the half ogre, half human war leader as a slave. Yhalen, refusing to bend, soon pays the price for offending prickly ogre pride. But Bloodraven is no mindless, violent ogrish beast. Bloodraven has an agenda and Yhalen finds himself drawn in the wake into human and ogre politics, into bloodshed and cruelty and into the forbidden magic that is damnation in the eyes of his own people, but which might mean the difference between death and salvation.

REVIEW:

Extraordinarily sexy, moving, and over the top. I want more —a sequel; another adventure; anything. After 600+ pages, my only complaint is that there is not another book to continue the saga. Bloodraven is an M/M erotic fantasy; dark and violent with plenty of raw, primal sex. This is the first time I’ve read a book with a non-consensual relationship. Though the Stockholm syndrome is certainly at play, the love that emerges is very real and extremely hot. I am a huge fan of the “enemies to lovers” theme and PL Nunn pulls this off beautifully.

REVIEW: Absolutely, insanely crazy about it! I will definitely read this again!

Book Review: Captive Prince (Captive Prince #1) C.S. Pacat

TITLE:  Captive PrinceCaptive Prince: Volume One (Captive Prince, #1)

SERIES:  Captive Prince #1

AUTHOR:  C.S. Pacat

PUBLISHER:  Berkley

LENGTH:  241 Pages

BLURB:

“This was Vere, voluptuous and decadent, country of honeyed poison”

Damen is a warrior hero to his people, and the truthful heir to the throne of Akielos, but when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.

Beautiful, manipulative and deadly, his new master Prince Laurent epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.

For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else…

REVIEW:

I was captivated from page one. This book is full of action, intrigue, and sexual tension. The story begins with a coup that results in the enslavement of Prince Damen. The new king gifts the prince to a rival prince as a bed slave. There are so many things that can go wrong for him, which makes the book extremely suspenseful. I’m so glad that the second book is out there and I have a feeling I’ll be impatiently awaiting the third book.

RATING: Crazy about it! I will read it again!

Book Review: Neko by P.L. Nunn

TITLE:    NekoNeko

AUTHOR:    PL Nunn

PUBLISHER:    Lulu

LENGTH:    221 Pages

BLURB:

A young Neko is captured and sold into slavery. In the hands of brutal woodsmen, who consider him more animal than human, he learns the true meaning of brutality, until he is rescued by a mysterious trapper with secrets of his own.

WARNINGS! This is not a pleasant tale. There is brutal and inventive NON-CON, Bestiality, Torture, and exaggerated scenes of humiliation, sadism and bondage and gratuitous violent M/M sex. NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. There will be resolution at the end, that was never addressed in the Comic book, but the Neko will go through hell before he gets it. You Have been warned.

REVIEW:

I can’t say I liked this as much as I liked Bloodraven. I’m glad that there was a happy ending for Neko, but for the first half of the book, I was wondering when things would start moving along in the story. It seemed like there was nothing but torture. It was very inventive torture, but it was never ending with no apparent escape or resolution in sight. Things got better later in the book, but not spectacular.  I rated Neko with four stars because I admire the author’s courage in writing something so taboo and out there. Of course, this book comes with strong advisories for non-con, violence and abuse. I recommend this novel to anyone who likes dark m/m erotica, and to anyone looking for where they draw the line. As for me, this book was crazy, but not enough that I felt I had to put it down. I’ll certainly be reading more of PL Nunn.

AUTHOR:     J.A. Rock

PUBLISHER:     Self-Published

LENGTH:     301 pages

BLURB:

In a future where live sex shows abound to keep a jaded population entertained, dancer Bode Martin falls for the brilliant and unstable Kilroy Ballast, who molds Bode into the star attraction of his erotic circus, the Grand Ballast. Drugged beyond any real feeling, Bode trades freedom and his once considerable pride for an illusion of tenderness—until he inadvertently rescues a young man from a rival show, and together they flee to an eccentric town in the west where love still means something. Valen’s not an easy man to know, and Bode shed his romantic notions under Kilroy’s brutal employ. Yet their growing bond becomes a strange and dangerous salvation as they attempt to overthrow the shadows of their pasts and wade together through a world of regret, uncertainty, beauty, and terror. But Kilroy won’t let Bode go so easily. Long ago, Bode was responsible for the loss of something Kilroy held dear, and he still owes Kilroy a debt.
