Review: The Autumn Lands by J. Scott Coatsworth #GayScifi #MMRomance

TITLE:  The Autumn LandsThe Autumn Lands

AUTHOR:  J. Scott Coatsworth

PUBLISHER:  Mischief Corner Books

LENGTH:  121 Pages

BLURB:

Jerrith is running. Kissed by an elf, he can’t remain in his hometown of Althos anymore. Not that he wanted to stay.

Caspian still hasn’t figured out why he kissed Jerrith, but he’s running too. Since he was exiled from the Autumn Lands, his past has been hazy, and his future uncertain.

But when a stray memory brings things into focus, the two decide to run toward something together. What they uncover will change how they see the world, and themselves, forever.

REVIEW:

The Autumn Lands begins with a kiss—one that leads to serious consequences for both Jerrith and Caspian. Jerrith is an average guy, but Caspian is and elf who has lost his wings. As Caspian’s memories start to come back, he realizes that Jerrith is his destiny and kissing him was what led to his downfall. Jerrith and Caspian set off to the Autumn lands to set things straight, but when they arrive there is a surprise waiting for them.

Though there was no sex in this book I loved the relationship between Jerrith and Caspian. They were meant to be together so everything just felt right for them. Though their journey was dangerous, they were both cast out by their people, so they had nothing to lose and everything to gain. I especially liked it when Caspian’s former lover comes into play, since Jerrith’s jealousy seemed to strengthen their relationship. Though the romance aspect was sweet, I think the most notable part of this book was the world building. In the beginning, the world appeared almost like a Middle Ages setting, but as they learn more about their circumstances, it becomes clear that they are on another planet. So the effect was that it started out seeming like fantasy, but by the end it was definitely Sci-fi. Though I loved the world the author created, I at times became a little overwhelmed. This may have been due to the fact that Caspian is remembering everything little by little and sharing it with Jerrith along the way. So the reader is learning about the universe along with the main characters. Despite having to back paddle a little to keep up, I understood enough about their situation that I thoroughly enjoyed the ending.

This is the first thing I’ve read from J. Scott Coatsworth, but I look forward to reading more. I recommend this book to anyone who likes M/M Sci-fi, Adventure, Dark Fantasy, and Sweet M/M Romance.

RATING: I liked it!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Scott has been writing since elementary school, when he and won a University of Arizona writing contest in 4th grade for his first sci fi story (with illustrations!). He finished his first novel in his mid twenties, but after seeing it rejected by ten publishers, he gave up on writing for a while.

Over the ensuing years, he came back to it periodically, but it never stuck. Then one day, he was complaining to Mark, his husband, early last year about how he had been derailed yet again by the death of a family member, and Mark said to him “the only one stopping you from writing is you.”

Since then, Scott has gone back to writing in a big way, finishing more than a dozen short stories – some new, some that he had started years before – and seeing his first sale. He’s embarking on a new trilogy, and also runs the Queer Sci Fi (http://www.queerscifi.com) site, a support group for writers of gay sci fi, fantasy, and supernatural fiction.

Spotlight, Author Q&A, & Giveaway: The Opposites Series by TM Smith #MMRomance

1-Opposites Pics

We’re pleased have T.M. Smith here today to promote the re-release of her Opposite’s Series. Welcome T.M. 🙂

Opposites series

*All books available exclusively through Amazon and FREE on Kindle Unlimited*

Book 1, Opposites

Opposites* * * NOTE * * * This is the 2nd edition of Opposites, originally published in 2013 under the same title and Author. The book has been thoroughly edited with errors and unnecessary content removed, and new content included.

In the year 2081, our planet survived global warming on an apocalyptic scale. When the dust settled and the water receded, Dr. Anthony Smith, one of only a few hundred survivors of GWI, started society anew. Having come to the conclusion that injudicious breeding played a huge role in the destruction of Earth as we knew it in the twenty first century, he worked closely with other survivors to isolate the Dionysus gene: the gene has the ability to manipulate human DNA to ensure that all male children be born gay, and all female children be born lesbians.
A new society was born.

In the year 2300 Dr. Smith’s descendants are ushering in the twenty fourth century having maintained control of the government that still rules society. Twins, Aiya and Aiyan, are preparing to meet their matches and take control of House Gaeland, the current ruling House. But not everything is as it seems.

Love is Love… it knows no gender and doesn’t conform to restrictions or boundaries. Aiyan has found his soul mate in Kaden, the prince of House Devi, that he is matched with and eventually marries. But when the person Aiya falls in love with tests the boundaries put in place after GWI, all hell breaks loose. And in the midst of one secret unraveling, another will emerge. There is a growing anomaly that threatens to destroy over two hundred years of progression. This anomaly is known as Opposites.

*WARNING* Opposites is an Adult Dystopian majorly M/M novel that contains explicit sexual content and relationships between gay, lesbian and straight couples. There are brief scenes of violence.

Book 1.5 The Library, an Opposites novella

The Library (Opposites, #1.5)

* * * NOTE * * * This is the 2nd edition of The Library, originally published in 2013 under the same title and Author. The book has been thoroughly edited with errors and unnecessary content removed, and new content included.

Three gay couples run amuck in this short story where clothing, beds, even four walls are all optional!

Want to know what happened that night in the library?
Cirian and Rian had a fight in the library and Rian ends up naked on the desk, on his back, at Cirian’s mercy.

Want to know how far things went with ice cream?
A romantic evening by the fire feeding his husband ice cream leads to a lot more than heavy petting for Aiyan and Kaden.

Want to know what was going on when those birds fled?
Travelling hundreds of miles, battling the rebels and then travelling back to House Gaeland will take it out of you. But when Tanis wants something, he takes it. Raven is about to be bent over a tree!

A Note from the Author: I’ve taken three scenes from Opposites that were cut short and elaborated on the shenanigans that ensued. I also focused more in the beginning on the relationship between Cirian and Rian, to give readers a chance to get to know them and the inner workings of their relationship a little better.

**Warning, The Library is a novella set in the same world as Opposites. While the series itself contains explicit content by consenting, adult couples (including MM MF & FF) The Library is strictly a MM novella **

Appearances, can be deceiving.

Raven and Tanis are trying very hard to merge their vastly different lifestyles, but Tanis issues with his own past could prove to be more than their fragile relationship can handle. Is their love for each other strong enough to weather the oncoming storm?

Aiya and Sawyer have fought hard to be together in a world where Opposite relationships are generally forbidden. Yet, they are still forced to keep their relationship a secret while they are outside the walls of House Gaeland.

Everyone assumes that the only threat lies outside their walls, the group of rebels led by Cillian. But something is happening within House Gaeland, something that hasn’t happened since GWI. And with all the attention focused on that, their guard is down. An evil that was under their nose all along strikes, and someone will make the ultimate sacrifice to save another.

Appearances is the second book in the Opposites series, the series should be read in order.

It’s time to learn the truth about what happened that day in The Cellar.

Taryn and Thanos are the formidable Ambassadors of House Orion. Taryn was born into power, bred from birth to lead the people of Greece along with his sister Theresa, Thanos was never a part of his mothers’ plan. The son of a fisherman was not a suitable match for the son of Greece as far as their mothers’ were concerned, but Taryn usually gets his way.

Opposites teaser (2)

Q&A with Author TM Smith

Where are you from, and where do you call home?

I was born and raised in Georgia until I was 24. I was born military and married military so when my ex got out of the Army, we moved to Texas and I’ve been here ever since.

What inspired you to start writing?

I love to read, and the more I read fiction and fantasy, I started coming up with different outlandish stories in my head. One day I decided to sit down and try to turn it into something. The rest, as they say, is history.

How long have you been writing?

I started writing Opposites in 2010. So, 6 years now.

What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?

Be very sure that this is what you want to do, because for every fan you find, there will be a hater lingering in the background. Overall, the LGBT writing community is an amazing group of people. There has to be a few bad apples though, and the negativity occasionally hits you where it hurts. You just have to let it roll off and keep going. There is one rule to live by if you want to be an Author, never engage the crazy. Comment and leave praise for those positive reviews all day long. But do not, I repeat, do not comment on a negative review, ever! It never ends well.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

Oh hell yes, don’t we all? Sometimes I have to make myself write, I might trash 90% of it in the end, but that 10% I get to keep is pretty fucking amazing. Other times I have to walk away and recharge. I have hit a wall a couple of times trying to take the story in a direction it didn’t want to go, or trying to force a character into a story. I’ve learned that if the character stops speaking to you, you’ve probably pissed them off, so figure out why and fix it. And if you can’t, either scrap them all together or kill them off and make it intense.

What Author’s in the genre do you read?

That list would take all day to complete. Some of my very favorites though, I’m talking auto buy just because of who wrote it, or books I have re-read multiple times… Sandrine Gasq-Dion, Andrew Grey, Mary Calmes, Morticia Knight, AE Via, Cardeno C and Amy Lane… just to name a few.

What comes first, the plot or characters?

That is a trick question, both. Sometimes someone just starts talking and I start writing and I mold his or her part of the story around them. Then there are times I come up with an amazing storyline in my head and I have to work the characters into it.

Are you working on anything at the present you would like to tell us about?

I am actually, lots of goodies for 2016! Gay for Pay is out now in audio, but I’m also having it translated in French through Juno Publishing. My editor is pouring over the Opposites series books as I type, helping me clean them up and I’m going to re-release that series. Opposites was the first book I wrote and I did it without an editor, don’t do that people. I think that cleaning them up is going to give the series new life and that makes me happy, I love the dichotomy of that series so much.

Describe the perfect writing space.

Sitting at my desk with my headphones in and a Mimosa next to me. I think I might like sitting on the beach with my laptop and a drink with an umbrella in it as well though.

Do you do research for your books? If so, what does that entail?

I do actually. I like to have an element of reality in my stories. For the Opposites series I had to research high points of elevation, water lines, fault lines, different cultures and economies. For the All Cocks stories I have had to endure hours upon hours of sexy, sweaty, hot man sex. I know, it’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it. Then there are aspects to some of my stories that aren’t as much fun to research, but I’m afraid if I don’t, someone that has lived through it would be offended at my ignorance.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

5 novels and 2 novellas. You might as well ask me to pick my favorite child, that is a no win scenario.

Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?

I do actually, I love to stay in touch with my readers. 99.9% of my emails from fans or messages on facebook is hearing what they liked or didn’t like about the books, asking when the next book is out, things like that. I remember about a week after Fame and Fortune released, I got an email from someone that was a survivor of sexual assault and she was telling me how impressed she was with the reality of the situation that I got right while not going too far or downplaying what happened in the book. She said while it was hard for her to read, it was very well written and conveyed. Brought a tear to my eye it did.

Sadly, I have gotten the reminder emails that I am going to face eternal fire and damnation for supporting the sin of homosexuality. What I want to know is where is that damn fire right now? It’s fucking freezing here in Texas!

Kane knows what being a magpie means, and he’s got the bruises to show for it. Review: Snowmancer (Godsbane Prince #1) by Olivia Helling

TITLE: SnowmancerSnowmancer

SERIES: Godsbane Prince

AUTHOR: Olivia Helling

PUBLISHER: M/M Romance Group

LENGTH: 147 Pages

BLURB:

A partner he could trust. That’s what Prince Heir Ilyas wanted most in the world. Instead, he spent his days alone defending his future throne from his younger brothers and reaping the rewards of their estates. But when he receives his latest conquest, a slave named Jem, he’s abducted to the far reaches of a frozen wasteland to be sacrificed to Jem’s backwater god.

Someone who would see him. The one thing Jem knows he can never have. Instead, Jem walks the world searching for the sacrifice that will save the people who fear and shun him — the beautiful and proud Ilyas. Capturing Ilyas might have been simple, but keeping him safe for his god is another matter.

Trapped in their struggle and tight quarters, they’re both haunted by the whisper in each other of the warmth they dared not dream for. But nothing can stop the Dark God from coming. Nothing short of death. Can one kill the other? Or will they both be destroyed?

DARK ARTS ELEMENTS:

Captive, Dark M/M Fantasy

REVIEW:

Snowmancer was an entertaining and moving dark fantasy read. The story begins when Prince Ilyas is captured and brought to a neighboring kingdom, which is in a barren frozen wasteland. Since Ilyas has grown up with every luxury imaginable, he has a hard time believing that all that they have to feed him is hard, stale bread. Though he is upset with his circumstances, Ilyas becomes entranced with his captor, Jem. The more he learns about Jem, the more he forgets about his own discomforts. Over time, Jem seems to change something fundamental in Ilyas. Even though the Dark God is an ever present danger, Ilyas struggles to prevail for reasons far bigger than the preservation of his life.

I loved the world building in this book and I especially enjoyed the change in Ilyas’s character. Ilyas starts off as a prince who is arrogant and used to having his way. He has trouble recognizing the suffering and hunger of the people around him and only realizes their suffering when it is pointed out to him. However, as the book progresses and Ilyas starts to fall for Jem, Ilyas becomes less self-centered. There is finally someone in the world that he cares for more than himself. I think that change was what really drew me in. I went from wishing bad things on Ilyas to rooting for him. Though I loved the dark world the author creates, I was a little thrown off by the magical aspects and especially the magic used in the end. Even though this threw me for a loop, it didn’t take away from the story in any way. I recommend Snowmancer to anyone who loves M/M dark fantasy, M/M Slave themes, & M/M Romance.

SERIES:  In the Company of Shadows #1

AUTHOR:  Santino Hassell & Ais

PUBLISHER:  Unpublished

LENGTH:  334 Pages

BLURB:

In a post-apocalyptic future, the Agency works behind the scenes to take down opposition groups that threaten the current government. Their goals justify all means, even when it comes to their own agents.

In the newly revised Director’s Cut of Evenfall, the second volume follows Sin and Boyd through a long-term undercover mission in Mexico. They think the hardest part will be maintaining their covers and handling their attraction while living in close quarters, but that’s only the beginning of their newest trials.

When hard and fast decisions lead to catastrophic consequences, the two agents realize getting out of Mexico alive may be their biggest challenge yet.

Warnings: Explicit violence, sex, physical and psychological abuse.

REVIEW:

Boyd’s mother works for a secret agency and has decided to bring him on to be the partner of the highly dangerous, Sin. Though Sin tries everything possible to drive Boyd crazy, they end up falling for each other. They realize they want to be together, but they have to get past the agency and Boyd’s mother before that can happen.

Excellent action and romance. I love it! Both Boyd and Sin are damaged goods, but in this way, they are perfect for each other. Sin; the super sexy, extremely dangerous, and possibly psychotic secret agent is not so scary when paired with the timid, androgynous beauty Boyd. Although there’s a rocky start to their relationship; with almost every touch leading to an argument or misunderstanding, there is certainly love in the air and I’m hoping to see a lot of it in part II.

Book Review: Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale

TITLE:    Wicked GentlemenWicked Gentlemen

AUTHOR:    Ginn Hale

PUBLISHER:    Blind Eye Books

LENGTH:    224 Pages

BLURB:

Belimai Sykes is many things: a Prodigal, the descendant of ancient demons, a creature of dark temptations and rare powers. He is also a man with a brutal past and a dangerous addiction. And Belimai Sykes is the only man Captain William Harper can turn to when faced with a series of grisly murders.

But Mr. Sykes does not work for free and the price of Belimai’s company will cost Captain Harper far more than his reputation. From the ornate mansions of noblemen, where vivisection and sorcery are hidden beneath a veneer of gold, to the steaming slums of Hells Below, Captain Harper must fight for justice and for his life.

His enemies are many and his only ally is a devil he knows too well. Such are the dangers of dealing with the wicked.

REVIEW:

Very Dark, suspenseful, and extremely well written. Wicked Men is a clever mixture of fantasy, romance, and mystery which appears to be set in the 1700-1800’s. Ginn Hale creates a world which is much like our own except for the existence of prodigals; a repressed class of magical men who are the descendants of demons. The story revolves around two unlikely lovers who come together while investigating a mystery that threatens to take them down.  Excellent story and highly recommended.

SERIESThe Invisible Chains #1

AUTHOR: Andrew Ashling

PUBLISHER: Ormidon Publishing

LENGTH:  466 Pages

BLURB:

While the kingdom of Ximerion is threatened at its southern border by a major power, the high king sends his two youngest sons, the half brothers Anaxantis and Ehandar, as Lord Governors to the Northern Marches where minor raids by wild barbarians are expected. Under the guidance of an old and trusted general, the king hopes to keep the young princes far from the major conflict in the south, while at the same time providing them with a valuable learning experience. The estranged half brothers are rivals, but soon they feel attracted to each other. As if this was not enough of a complication, they begin to suspect that they were set up by their own father. The result is a fierce struggle for power where the lines between hate and love become almost indistinguishable and where nothing is what it seems.

REVIEW:

Dark, very dark, but such an awesome discovery. I love finding a series like this; one that I want to keep reading non-stop until the very end. Bonds of hate is a story about two princes with a love hate relationship. I don’t like spoilers so I won’t say much. Just that I’m in love with the young prince Anaxantis, but I fear for him. How far will he fall into darkness before he heals from his wounds. I hope he can find a way to forgive before he becomes the monster he despises. Although this book ends at a suspenseful crossroads, I’m in no way disappointed. I’m hungry for more, so I’ll definitely keep reading.
