Bound Gods: Book 3 Betrayed

The stakes are rising.

As the god-son closes in leaving more bodies in its wake, treason and betrayal against the Association is unveiled. An inquiry for the Goddesses has been called, threatening everything Leo holds dear.

And the Chimera is not about to let go without a fight.

Despite the dangers lurking in the shadows, Leo wants his doxie Kaleb to think of only one thing. Him. His training. His purpose. And embrace the reality of what he is and not be ashamed of his attraction to Aaron, the doxie tossed aside by Sol.

Attraction is one thing. Bringing the boy to their bed is something else entirely. Kaleb can’t possibly want anyone but Leo. A lie Kaleb will pay dearly for. Penance Leo will be more than happy to deliver.

But penance for a lie will pale in comparison to what Kaleb must do to keep Sol from taking Aaron away, and invoking the Chimera into a lifetime in chains.

REVIEW:

Extraordinary dark erotica! The plot thickens with book 3 which begins with Kaleb’s realization that he desires the discarded doxie, Aaron. Though there is a lot of sex in this book, it’s all very hot, and I never once tired of it. In addition to Kaleb’s training, Leo learns more about the plot which brought Kaleb into being, and Leo throws the other gods for a loop by making an unexpected doxie request.

This was an exciting and erotic addition to the Bound Gods series. Kaleb is taken to new heights and his limits stretched even further, while Leo continues his plan of weaponizing Kaleb’s ambrosia so no god but Leo can touch him. I enjoyed learning more about the god’s plotting, and revelations about the mysterious monster targeting doxies is starting to give me ideas about where things might be going. Though I felt bad for what Kaleb had to endure, I enjoyed the exciting way that this book ended. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.

Blog Tour + Giveaway: Strong Medicine by J.K. Hogan #MM #DarkThemes @JK_Hogan

Strong Medicine Banner

I’m pleased to welcome J.K. Hogan on the blog today to promote her upcoming release, Strong Medicine, with a guest post, excerpt, and giveaway.

If you could pick one thing for readers to take away and remember after reading Strong Medicine, what would it be and why?

With Strong Medicine, the answer is definitely a better understanding of mental illness and those who live with it. Misconceptions and stigmas run rampant in the world of mental health, and often times people don’t try to correct their perception of things. First and foremost, there is one thing probably everyone with any type of mental illness, myself included has been told: a variation of “just get better.” Calm down, you have nothing to worry about, stop thinking that way, suck it up…and the list goes on. Mental illnesses are also clinical illnesses. They have symptoms and must be treated to get better. And, even more so I think than physical illnesses, getting better is depended on the willingness of the sufferer to believe they can get better (without dismissing their actual illness while doing so).

This was my main character’s problem. He didn’t believe he could get better, maybe he didn’t even believe he deserved to, so he didn’t try. It wasn’t until he met someone that made him see that he could have a normal life, and want one, that he put the time and effort into treatment.

Something else I explore in Strong Medicine is the belief that people with severe mental illnesses are just locked away since nothing can be done. For most of these disorders, there is no cure, but that doesn’t mean sufferers can’t create a new normal and learn to live with it. Which is exactly what my characters do, after a long struggle for understanding.

I would encourage anyone acquainted with someone who suffers from a psychiatric disorder to do some research, get educated, and reach out. Don’t just assume you know, and avoid the subject. Not all sufferers of OCD are light-switch-flippers. Disorders manifest in many ways, and you never know what the person beside you is struggling with, so make the decision to be there for them.

Thanks! I hope you enjoy Strong Medicine!

Synopsis

Two men who meet in a psychiatric institution couldn’t possibly find happiness together—could they?

The world seemed to be telling disgraced former child star and singer Cameron Fox that he would never be happy again. A drunken car accident gets him sentenced to a work-release at Riverbend Behavioral Health Facility.

Reclusive, traumatized writer Jonah Radley has an entire graveyard of skeletons in his closet. Jonah regularly hospitalizes himself for psychotic episodes caused by a horrific childhood trauma, his biggest secret—one he refuses to speak about in therapy.

Jonah and Cameron form a bond inside the hospital, forged in mutual pain and hope for a better life. Once they leave the hospital, they must decide if they are brave enough to explore the intricacies of living with mental illness—and find a new normal together.

Excerpt

Jonah was feeling particularly lucid that day. He hadn’t seen any dead relatives, nothing had burned, and he actually felt like he was inside his own body, for once. He knew it wouldn’t last. It was a constant feeling of dancing on the edge of the cliff, just waiting for the one misstep that would send him plummeting into the void again.

He sat in the rocking chair, the one that had become known as ‘Jonah’s chair,’ and watched Harry the groundskeeper shovel snow off the patio next to the picture window. The scoliotic old man bent to sprinkle handfuls of rock salt over the pavers before moving on farther into the courtyard.

As usual, Jonah lost himself in the warmth of the blanket of sunlight, so much so that he was startled when he sensed a presence behind him. It was just a change in the air, a shift of the molecules, and then a new scent—sharp and heady, a mixture of cedar smoke and Old Spice. Jonah had smelled it before, yesterday. He didn’t need to see to know that the sparkly new probie was standing behind him.

And just like that, just picturing the man in his mind with his weird, shaggy blond hair, dark blue eyes, and boyish features, Jonah remembered. He’d been much younger then, the boy on the TV that his mother had sat him in front of when she couldn’t deal with his damning silence anymore. That boy, his sweet face, and even sweeter voice, had saved Jonah more times than he could count, just kept him hanging on for one more day.

Staring unblinking out the window, Jonah breathed deep of that fragrance and addressed the spectral memory of Kyle Chase. “I know you,” he whispered.

The air stilled as the movement behind him ceased, as if the other man had turned to stone.

“I loved you once.”

Footsteps. Soft, padding, staccato beats of leather against linoleum, until Jonah was face to face with his boyhood crush. Well, more like face to chest, since Jonah was seated and Kyle was looming over him. He wasn’t Kyle, of course, not really. Though Jonah strained, digging through layers of memory, he couldn’t extract the boy—man’s real name.

“Excuse me?” Not-Kyle asked, bushy eyebrows raised toward his hairline.

Jonah tried for a rueful smile, and he could practically hear his skin cracking with the effort. “Sorry, probie. It’s well known around here that I don’t make any sense. What I meant was ‘I used to watch your show.’”

“Oh. I, uh… really?”

Jonah half coughed, half grunted, because it was as close as he ever got to a laugh. “That surprises you?”

“Yes—No! I just sometimes forget that the people who used to watch my show are all grown-up now. Most of the time, I still feel like a kid, so it kind of catches me off guard.” He ran a hand through that mop of messy hair—bleached blond like he was still playing a Cali surfer boy on TV—then squatted down so that he was on Jonah’s level.

“I think you’d be the first one to call me a grown-up. I’ve been called a lot of things, but never that. Besides, I’m not as old as I look.”

“Yeah? How old?”

“Twenty-three.”

“Oh. Wow.”

“Yeah, I know. That’s what hard living and insanity will do to you,” Jonah explained without a hint of malice.

“Oh, no. I’m sorry, that came out wrong… You don’t look bad. It’s the opposite, really. You look… yeah, anyway, you’re right, you do just look older than twenty-three. Not in a bad way.”

“Easy there. It’s really okay. I’m pretty hard to insult. Most of the things you could think of to say about me would be true anyway.” Jonah wiped his sweaty palms on his sweatpants and reached on out to him. “Jonah Radley.”

“Cameron Fox.” Cameron took his hand, shook it, lingered just a second longer than was proper.

“I have to admit, I was wrangling for an introduction because I couldn’t remember your real name. I figure you probably wouldn’t want me calling you Kyle.”

Cameron’s laugh was soft, cozy, like a splash of honey in some warm Earl Grey. “No, I guess not. It’s nice to meet you, Jonah Radley. Radley, that’s an unusual name.”

“Indeed it is. Not as unusual as you’d think, but yes… I did have to deal with the well-read students in school calling me ‘Boo’ all the time. But this is rural Appalachia, so it wasn’t always a problem if you get my drift.”

Jonah could see it took Cameron a moment to get the reference, but when he did, he chuckled again. “So what made you decide to join the wonderful world of psychiatric care?” Jonah asked.

Something flashed in Cameron’s eyes, a cloud, a moment of indecision, before he answered. “I got arrested.”

“Ah, you’re one of Rohan’s boys.” Jonah kept his voice neutral, careful not to seem like he was judging, because people in glass houses and all that… “A probie in every sense of the word.”

Cameron lowered his head, studied the ugly, weathered linoleum. “Unfortunately.”

“Hey, we all have pasts. At least you have a future.”

That blond head snapped up, and Cameron gaped at him. “So do you, Jonah.”

Jonah shook his head sadly, then caught sight of a pair of dark, yawning eye sockets peering through the window. One of the dead girls, of course, just when he was starting to feel human again.

He didn’t make eye contact when he spoke to Cameron. “You should go now,” he whispered.

“Jonah…”

“Go!” Jonah shouted it, his voice tinged with desperation. He never cared before, but he didn’t want this man to see him disappear, to see him float. His eyes welled up, something that hadn’t ever happened at Riverbend before, and he felt ashamed. “Please.”

“Probie!” Rohan’s rich tenor rang out across the buzzing air, slicing the tension between them. Cameron tensed, and his feet seemed to obey Rohan before the rest of him caught up. He cast one more sad, sidelong look at Jonah before he was led away.

Once he was alone, Jonah began to shake. Shivering violently though he was burning up inside, Jonah felt tears sear flaming rivulets down his cheeks. He dug the heels of his hands into his eye sockets until they ached, and eventually the tears stopped. Then there was nothing left but smoke.

Runaway 18-year-old Shane O’Rourke is living under the Huntington Beach Pier.

REVIEW:

Fantastic read! Bend Over starts out with the eighteen-year-old, Shane, who has run away from home to escape his intolerant reverend father. Shane isn’t entirely sure about his sexuality, but when he has a sexual encounter in a beach shower with an older French speaking man, Shane’s only thought is that he wants that guy again. Although he doesn’t’ know it at first, Shane has made an impression on the man. Julien is the owner of a BDSM club and after his encounter with Shane, he has to have him as his boy. He makes all the arrangements to assure Shane ends up in his hands.

This book was extremely sexy. I loved how submissive Shane is and how at the same time he’s bratty and rebellious. Shane was missing a loving father figure in his life and Julien quickly fills that role. Since Shane messes up a lot, he earns a lot of punishment, but his punishments are always sexy and far from being harsh. Shane loves being spanked, which makes his discipline even hotter. Bend Over has a happy ending, and the only thing I’m wondering is if Julien will ever get his boy to behave. I recommend this book to anyone who loves M/M BDSM.

I’ve been betrayed by someone I trusted. Because of him, I was captured by my loathed enemy: The vampires. Right now, the sun is still high in the sky, but I know when it sets, I’m as good as dead. They can’t wait to get their fangs into me. I guess some would say I have it coming. I did raise a lot of hell with my Resistance crew, and I was planning on raising a hell of a lot more at dawn before I was sold out by Jonah. The vampires, werewolves and dragons, have been trying to track me down for months and I’d always been two steps ahead of them.
*Laughs* I guess my number is up. I just hope they make it quick. You see, the vampires in my reality aren’t the romantic lot you read about in books. They don’t sparkle or hang out at high schools with their teenage girlfriends. Hell no, vampires are brutal, calculating, sadistic and bloodthirsty. As a matter of fact, all of the monsters are! That’s how they were able to take over the world so easily and change an entire civilization to suit their needs. Whatever happens, I know it’s not going to be pretty, so I’m preparing myself for the worst. May God help me.

Warning: This novelette series contains hardcore sexual situations between men, not meant for sensitive eyes. I’m talking crude, lewd and full of attitude. This series will most likely either offend you or get ya revved up. This series isn’t going to be pulling any punches whatsoever, so you’ve been warned. Mature Adult Content meant for readers looking for something dark, taboo, sexy, and unapologetic in their paranormal erotica. This is NOT a romance. This novelette is approximately 13300 words.

REVIEW:

The main character, Noel, is taken prisoner by a vampire named Theoden. Though Noel is straight and somewhat homophobic, Theoden turns him into a vampire, making him come and crave a male’s touch in the process. Noel is still put off by the idea of having sex with men, but his vampire captor lets him know, in somewhat violent terms, that Noel will be his play thing whether he likes it or not.

This was a small glimpse into Noel and Theoden’s world of vampires and other shifters. Though nothing much has happened so far, the author sets the stage for what seems like a lot of hurt and humiliation for Noel. I want to sympathize for Noel and his situation, but so far I am not too fond of him due to his homophobic statements and lack of emotion after the death of his friend. He is a fighter, which should be sexy, but at this point neither character seems particularly appealing to me. This might be because Noel hasn’t displayed any attraction toward Theoden. If anything, Theoden may be displaying lust toward Noel, but it mostly feels like cruelty. Since this book is just one episode, I imagine there will be some kind of attraction that builds between them in episodes to come. Overall, this was a dark and twisted tale, and I am curious to see what happens next in this series.

REVIEW:

Bought is a short, twisted tale about a wolf shifter, Jace, who finds himself in the hands of his enemies. Jace quickly learns his place as the play thing and pet of a witch who uses his magic to make Jace suffer in ways he would never imagine. The witch takes full possession of Jace’s body, reducing him to a quivering mess until he finds himself submitting more than his body.

I enjoyed the glimpse into Jace’s world. The story revolves around his capture and initial hazing by the witch. There was some pretty harsh humiliation in this book; mostly due to Jace’s image of himself and what he imagined he would and wouldn’t do. I cringed a little with the tail scene, but overall it was pretty hot. I loved the edging and how Jace eventually begged for it. I look forward to reading what happens next in this series.

REVIEW:

I’ve had this book on my TBR list for quite some time, so I’m glad to finally have a chance to read it. Don’t… begins when Jack, a mechanic/martial arts instructor, who is a sub in a very exclusive group meets the beautiful and alluring Jan. Jack and Jan hit it off right away, but at the same time, Jack has a stalker messing with him. Jack is soon forced to reveal his BDSM lifestyle to Jan, including introducing Jan to his dom, Gray. Before either of them know what hit them, Jan gets thrown into Jack and Gray’s world. Jan is new to BDSM, but he’s willing to try for Jack. However, nothing is easy for them, and while things go downhill for the three men, an unknown danger lurks around the corner.

This book was extremely hot with some scary scenes mixed in. Jack’s toying with a stalker fantasy had a lot of potential to go wrong, and even though it was a fantasy, the group’s need for so much security was a testament to just how dangerous their games could be. Though a lot of the book revolved around a BDSM relationship, that bit of playing with dangerous concepts and the unknown actors kept me on edge. In addition to the suspense, I loved the switching and how Jan tried so hard to be what he thought Jack needed him to be. There was definitely a lot going on, but it all came together so nicely in the end. I look forward to reading more in this series. I recommend Don’t… to anyone who loves m/m dark erotica and dark BDSM.

EXCERPT:

“You know the lust arrows only work if the person’s mind is open to it. I shot Raymond with a Class 4 gay lust arrow. They only have a little more juice than a few tequila shooters. They can’t make a straight man gay.”

“But that is what you are trying to do,” Ethan shot back.

“You know it doesn’t work that way.”

To prove my point, I materialized one of my long purple arrows.

Without warning, I stabbed Ethan in the heart with it.

“Oww!”

The arrow exploded in a burst of light and glittering purple dust, the blast blowing our hair back.

When the magic cleared, the stunned expression on Ethan’s face cracked me up. “Now, do you spontaneously wanna suck my cock?”

He gaped at me like I’d lost my ever-lovin’ mind. “What did you do that for?”

“Don’t get your panties in a wad. Class 4G lusts can’t make someone gay. You’re born that way. There’s even a Lady Gaga song to prove it.”

His big hand rubbed where I’d hit him. “You should not have done that, Lio. You have no idea what you just did.”

“I already shot an unauthorized arrow tonight, what’s one more? Besides, unless you’re gay, it won’t affect you.” I waggled my brows. “So what are you so worried about? Got sumthin’ you wanna confess?”

He actually growled at me.

“Build a bridge,” I told him. “If anyone has a right to be pissed off here, it’s me. The gaydar says Raymond is gay, yet you asshats over in SD decided to shoot him and a woman with true love arrows. Talk about a douche move. Forcing the man to lie to himself and everyone about who he is. And how is that fair to do to the girl? She’s a victim too!”

“The IDAC does not consider a gaydar to be a reliable source of information,” he said, completely ignoring the more-than-valid complaint.

Humans were born with a variety of sexualities, but there were only a limited variety of arrows to complement the IDAC’s narrow-minded ideas on sexuality. In a nutshell, there were gay arrows and the naturally more powerful straight arrows. Don’t get me started on the complexities of targeting anybody not gay or straight. I was glad not to be assigned to those fledgling subdivisions of GD because they often had to work with the jerks in SD. However, both primary divisions had arrows for love (red) and lust (purple), each with four different strength ratings—one being the most potent. In other words, the Class 1S love Ethan had been using was the highest strength straight love arrow—aka the most powerful of all arrows.

Hence his being so pissed at me.

“I’m not gonna sit here and argue politics with you. We both know I’m already in trouble for an unauthorized arrow launch. Make that two,” I amended, gesturing to his chest. “Why the fuck do you think I don’t have love arrow privileges anymore? Hell, the sparks our collision set off will raise questions too. I’m already busted. Fine! I’m ready to face whatever comes my way. When I set out to do this, I knew there were risks.”

“Set out to do this?” he repeated, looking utterly appalled. “You mean you have done this before?”

I swallowed, feeling like a child being scolded. “Only on unattached people.”

“I cannot believe you would do that to someone! A person’s decision to come out is deeply personal. You have no right, Lio! None!”

Yeah, but the Fates did, I supposed. Who put those bitches in charge, anyway?

I didn’t know what Ethan’s big fat beef might be—besides the one in his pants—but I had to get my ass out of this sling. “Like I said, I’m already busted. If you think Raymond isn’t gay, let’s just follow them”—I pointed to my unauthorized mark and the guy with him, both of them deliberately brushing hips and shoulders as they walked down the street—“and see what happens. If he changes his mind, I’ll admit the gaydar is inaccurate, I’ll turn myself in for interrupting your mark, and you won’t even get in trouble.”

He glared. “And if your arrow works, I suppose you get to walk?”

“If I’m right, and those two dudes get their freak on, you can do what you want with me.” Too bad that wouldn’t be those full lips around my dick. “But you give me back the gaydar and you don’t tell anyone I have it or that I was here.”

Ethan looked at the device in his hand as if it would explode or jump up and bite his cock off. His expression would’ve been funny if this weren’t so serious. He seemed to be weighing something in his mind, and I felt his anger retracting. Still, an aura of incredible danger and masculinity wafted about him. My heart thumped wildly, both from nerves and the exotic spiciness of his skin. Knowing his ferocious appearance was tempered with an innate goodness made me a little hot.

Okay, a lot hot.

Though it went against every rule I made for myself, I couldn’t stop picturing Ethan naked. Sure, I was as horny as any cupid, but something about this Aztec amplified all of my senses far more than usual—especially the ones below the waist.

“I cannot believe I am saying this,” Ethan said slowly. “But I will give you one chance. One. But if you ruin that man’s life, your ass is mine.”

“Talk dirty to me,” I purred.

He lowered dark brows. “You are not funny.”

“I think I’m a really fun guy. Especially when I’m naked.” I couldn’t help myself and gave him a suggestive wink. “And whoever said a little dick up the ass would ruin a man’s life? Ever try it? The orgasms are un-fucking-believable.”

Ethan curled his lip and growled at me like an angry cat.

“Jeesh, sorry I mentioned it.”

He seized my arm in a viselike grip. “Come.”

If I’d known going with Ethan would turn my world upside down, I would’ve grabbed my gaydar and run, taking my chances with my boss, the IDAC, and even the Fates. Because I wasn’t prepared for what was coming my way.

Not at all.

EXCERPT:

“And number three…kiss me.”

“Kiss you?”  He snorted.

It was too late now to take it back.

“Yes.”

He chuckled to himself, “I should’ve known.”

“Known what?”

He came at me, more willingly than I expected.

“Is that what it is?”  The nerves returned, being this close to him would forever make me uneasy.  “How’s the ribcage?”  He pretended like he would touch me, I flinched and guarded the sore area.

“What do you think?”  I groaned, “it hurts like a bitch.”  I couldn’t bring myself to make eye contact, he was standing so close.  Any closer and I would’ve felt his body heat.  He snatched up my face and forced me to look him in the eyes.

“Hey?!”  I panicked.  His fingers went from my chin to around my neck.  I put one shaky hand on his wrist fearing he’d strangle me.  Instead he leaned down until our lips touched.  He didn’t close his eyes and I couldn’t even if I tried.  The silence in the room was deafening.

Just mouth on mouth, a dry kiss.
